Let's talk about the Report Players board!

Postby Nellyfox » Wed Sep 02, 2015 9:45 pm

So in the light of this thread, I wanted to open discussion on the Report Players board as a whole.

I feel the Report Players board has outstayed its welcome. Its original purpose, coming about a year ago, was to report players because the in-game report system was not yet implemented. Now, after post-game lobbies were introduced, it is being used to report players in a more effective manner.

The problem with this is that a feel players abuse this method. I always saw Report Players as a way to report immediate reports, ones that couldn't afford to be buried in many others. Someone is more likely to see a thread than a lone report because it's less cluttered.

However, lately as I've been moderating the board, the same thing happens. Harassment. Obviously, that's no fun for anyone. It's a bit tiring always having to clean up insults and hand out warnings that some members don't even listen to because they don't like a member or agree with someone.

I'm asking you guys what you think a solution can be. I have a few solutions that I ask you vote on.

Solution 1: Make restrictions for posting on reports more strict.

This will, in my mind, open up Report Players to a few people. Those who can post on reports would be staff, the OP, anyone reported, and any witnesses. No one else, no matter what you intend on saying.

Solution 2: Remove the Report Players board as a whole after Trial System is implemented.

This will erase the problems we have with the board. The Trial System will be used to process reports.

~~~~
Only two I can come up with for now...if you have any other solutions please feel free to post them.
I ask everyone stick to the topic at hand and to add some substance to their posts. Small posts that don't help discussion will not be accepted here.
When Trials comes out which is a few weeks, we can remove the board forever which is a huge benefit for the forums so I'm sure we can afford to wait for it to come out.
I like Solution One thus far since I'm not sure how efficient the Trial System will be. The Report Players section would be a good place to keep track of repeat offenders.
For example: Say there's a guy playing right now, entering games, throwing them... and moving on other games to do the same thing over and over. It would be good to just go straight to the forum to get the fellow booted.
If people continue being silly on the forum, then by all means you guys should give them a swift kick in the derrière.
----
Edit: @gorilla578 Hmmm I'm not familiar with that unfortunately. But since you know what you're talking about, I'll assume it's a good system. I'm still very unfamiliar with how ToS' Trial System will work.
Well Shelboo if it works like Overwatch on CS:GO, they should be on trial if there is a spike in reports on them.
I don't like the idea of removing the Report Players board, but sometimes other people that weren't witnesses can add helpful insight.
Just double the punishments for infringements on the rules and crack down on the Report Players thread.
It'll be a bit of extra work at first (sorry), but after people get used to the harsher rules it should become fairly easy to moderate.
Granted, I never post there, so I don't really know exactly what I'm talking about. Just my two cents.
Voted on Solution 1. In most cases there isn't much for anyone else to add, at all.
The removal of the whole Report Players forum should probably be delayed until the Trials system actually makes it a moot point to leave it up, if ever.
Can we have a solution 3????
Solution 3- Harsher punishments will be giving out to players who break rules, 1 warning then a board warning. Simple.
Wouldnt be enough.
People generally dont care about the official warnings, since they dont do anything, really.
There would need to be harder punishments then the warnings, but softer then Forum ban.
I speak about this further here:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=28854&p=840396#p840396
Personally I would preserve Player Reports entirely, but once Trials come up, I´d rename it to Trials and moved it under feedback as a "Discussion thread" where people can discuss how they handled particular Trial and why, this would help Trial Judges share their experience in between as well as with normal users, who will then be better potential candidates for new Trial Judges.
Not to mention it would help monitor if certain Trial Judge is going out of the bounds, and thus repairing such issue easily.
As of right now, I believe the Player Reports should allow commenting and stay opened for now, but the commenting on them has to be done 100% proffesionally (again, refer to the link I posted above).
I voted for "Other" in the Poll.
3 board warning = Temp ban
Continue after Temp ban = Perma-ban
Not entirely true Arckas.
Generally yes, 3 official warnings is a ban. However it's not always that case.
For people that have been showing signs of being a troll of troublemaker, I usually skip PM warnings and go for the official warning first. Sometimes, and usually for harassment cases, I ban people for 2 warnings.
Continuing after being temporarily bans does not get you a permaban, usually another temporary one which is just longer. Again it depends on the offenses, and moderator's call.
I feel a board warning would make people stop.
That's what you think. To others they're just numbers that don't mean much since nothing is really stopping them.
I chose option one even as much as I love posting in the reports thread (before the rule) it would be less cluttered. And anyone else postng should geta pm warning, the reports board whren trails come out but like someone said before have discution and any off topic posts or herrasments should get a pm earning
I favor the first option. I would not eliminate the report players board entirely because as others have stated we do not know how effective the trials system will be. Once we know then we can decide if the board should go.
I like Mroz4k's suggestion of making the report players board a feedback board on the trials system, but I wonder what that would look like? If the trials system can give suspensions then players can't appeal them anyway. . . also I can imagine a lot of anger from people complaining about their trial.
I do think we need to restrict the report players board a bit. I have noticed a lot of reports recently for things that could be easily (and should be) brushed off and not really worthy of a report (not including the permabannable stuff). Some of the reports even seemed baited to me. Maybe the report players board should be restricted solely to reports worthy of a permaban? I usually just report players in-game and save the reports board for repeat offenders needing immediate attention (Gamethrower, etc.) or permabans.
If we're going to go down that path, it should be made inaccessible to those that aren't judges or those with a position of power like the hidden place canned threads go.
I definitely don't want to see the Report Players board go. To me, it should be used for only 2 things - really blatant offenses that deserve to take the dev's attention, or edge cases that the in-game system doesn't yet cover (like pre/post-game lobbies).
I'm not really a huge fan of making it be a mod-only posting board (other than witnesses or the OP) - there are only a few mods and there are a lot of us. If I'm bored, I sometimes look through Unread Posts for something I can help with - if I see a report where I can give the OP some advice or something like that I'll do it (like - "do you have any screenshots" or "that's not reportable at all" or a clarification about the offense). I feel like restrictions to mods only clogs up Unread Posts with things I can't do anything with - using ZenDesk or something like that would be better.
If it was something like Trusted Users only that would be a fair balance. It would come with the current understanding that screwing around as a Trusted User gets you kicked out of the group.
The problem is some Trusted Users have been contributing to this problem.
And to my knowledge reporting in-game does include lobby chat/name selection chat. That's what I was told, at least.
If they're contributing to the problem they should be warned and removed from the group much more strictly than a normal user getting banned. Being a trusted user is a privilege, not a right, and I think it should be taken away if you get in any kind of trouble, to possibly be given back if you regain your trust.
Trusted users should be nothing more than a usergroup for people who we know arent going to spam gore. In my opinion.
Trusted users very rarely have an opinion that is smarter than a non-trusted user, from my experience at least.
Player Reports will be vastly different with the trial systems so i see no reason to change it at this time. If we wait i think we can see what happens.
I've recently asked about warnings/bans contributing to Trusted User status...I need to find that chat again and see what TurdPile responded. Pretty sure a ban boots you while a warning doesn't ? Don't recall.
