Puppeteer - Neutral (Killing)

Postby RiceHatMan » Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:44 pm

Role Name:
Puppeteer

Role Alignment:
Neutral (Killing)

Abilities:
- During the day, you may choose someone to be your puppet during the night
- During the night, if you have chosen a puppet, you may choose who they will attack

Attributes:
- You will not be able to pick a puppet during the day if it is day 1, or your puppet was killed last night or was hanged during the same day (you will still be able to select if they are to be hanged, it will just go away once they are hanged and you will not be able to select another puppet the same day).
- Your puppet will not be able to choose a target the night you use them, but they will still be able to talk normally
- Your puppet will attack and be the one visiting your night target
- You will be notified at the end of the night if your target was intercepted by a Bodyguard or Trapper, role blocked, or jailed by the Jailor and not executed.
- Your puppet will have all their abilities and attributes except for their defense replaced or removed by a puppet's abilities and attributes

Notifications:
- You will receive "You feel a frightening presence take control of you. You have been turned into a puppet!" at the start of the night if you are used by a Puppeteer

Goal:
Kill everyone who would oppose you.

Win Conditions:
You must kill Town
You must kill Mafia
You must kill Serial Killers
You must kill Arsonists
You must kill Werewolves
You must kill Vampires
You win with Survivors
You win with Witches
You may spare anyone else

Special Attributes:
- Attack: None
- Defense: Basic
- Unique Role

Investigator Results:
Sheriff - Your target is suspicious!
Investigator - Your target could be a Framer, Vampire, Jester, Hex Master, or Puppeteer.
Consigliere - Your target turns others into their own puppets. They must be a Puppeteer.

Achievements:
TBD

Additional Information:
Puppet Abilities and Attributes:
Abilities
- You will follow the Puppeteer's orders and deal a basic attack to your target
Attributes
- You will retain your defense, but not any other attributes
Your puppet is technically control immune, and will only be controlled if you are role blocked, controlled, or decide not to choose a target for your puppet to attack. If you are controlled, the controller will choose who your puppet will attack. In a sense, a Puppeteer and their puppet works very similar to a Godfather and their Mafioso, it's just that the Puppeteer can only order the puppet and cannot attack, while the puppet cannot have their own target. The puppet still retains their role, and they will be released the next night, unless you use them again. The puppet can still communicate during the night, so they can talk to the Jailor.

Lore:
TBD

Combination between a Witch, Framer, and a Serial Killer.
Too powerful.

The Puppeteer can affect any role. The Puppeteer now cannot select a puppet if it is day 1 or if their puppet died last night or lynched the same day (similar to Trapper). This means that a Bodyguard will prevent the Puppeteer from getting another kill the next night. Do you think this is a good nerf? If it is, is it good enough?

Well, it is mechanically simple to make it have a day ability instead of Witch UI night ability. On paper, they are basically the same, and they kind of are. Since this role is a bit over-powered, I want to make the actual role weak to role blocks and controls. If this were to have Witch UI night ability, controllers would then control who you make into a puppet, not who your puppet attacks. It would also make this role immune to role blocks, or not be able to affect roleblock immune roles, which makes this role over or under-powered respectively. Not to mention you have to make it the same priority as Witch, so it get complicated whether or not you control or the Witch controls. Also, Transporter could then make a Puppeteer make themselves into a puppet, and I don't know what would happen then. It's just more simple to make it a day ability, and it doesn't change much. In fact, it might nerf this role a bit because people are notified at the start of the night if they were turned into a puppet, and also makes this role perfectly susceptible to role blocks and controls without any weird interactions.

Does the day ability make it more overpowered? Would it be better if it were to visit it's puppet?

Also, are indirect attacks that can still be blocked really that over-powered? It might discourage Jailor meta, since a Puppeteer might send someone after them. I guess it would be over-powered late game, but then again, this role is susceptible to role blocks and controls, so does it weigh out?

Compare this with Coven roles. It's comparable with some Coven roles when they have the Necronomicon.

(Coven roles are overpowered compared with Mafia roles, but if OP intended this to be balanced relative to Coven then I wouldn't blame him.)

It isn't a role at all.

It's an accomplice-type single-night manipulation effect.

Well, if it is, it doesn't matter, because it isn't a role, nor do they have intent for the Puppeteer to win. At this point names don't really matter when they don't really mean anything anymore. Also, why do they suck. That's literally all I can say.

Not a bad role. Like someone else said though, I feel like the puppet should now win with the puppeteer once they're turned into the puppet. Maybe to make this role a little less OP though, maybe the puppet will visit the puppet every night?

No because the puppet isn't really a real "role". This isn't really a conversion role. It's basically just a role that day-roleblocks a target and forces them to perform an attack on someone for the night. They still keep the same wincon and stuff.

I thought that it gave someone abilities

Edit: Snipped the OP.
Also, additional opinion: I think it's too powerful to give an NK the ability to both witch someone and kill another player in the same night. Perhaps it can be argued that it isn't really a "witch" ability, but it still controls a player into killing another player. Perhaps this idea might work if it alternates between witching someone and killing someone each night.

I guess it would be. However, this role does not have the capability to kill every night, since if the player you turned into a puppet the night before dies or gets lynched, you will have to wait a night before you can choose another puppet. This means if your puppet is counterattacked by a Bodyguard or executed by a Jailor, you will not be able to "witch" or attack the next night.

It's an interesting concept, but I don't think the Puppet should get a retaliation kill if Rbed, Jailed but not exe'd, etc. That would make it too op, considering the Puppeteer isn't directly killing, and is instead using people to do the killing.

Now that I think about it, that's quite true. I don't know why I didn't think of that.
