Postby ImposterK » Sun Aug 11, 2019 8:43 am

Ranger (Town Killing)
A brave trooper who searches and kills evildoers.

Abilities:
-At night, observe and interrogate someone.

Attributes:
-You will observe your targets every night until you've chosen someone to interrogate.
-If the player you interrogate visits any player you were observing and has malicious intent, you will attack them.
-After you interrogate someone, you will no longer be observing anyone.
-You may observe yourself.

Special Attributes:
Attack: Basic
Defense: None

Other Information:
-You do not have to interrogate someone every night you observe someone; however, you are able to if you want to.
-You may interrogate someone that you were observing.
-"Malicious intent" is any non-town role that can visit.
-You will only visit the player you were observing the night you start observing them.
-After interrogating someone, you will still be able to use your night ability, but everything will be reset.
-Left buttons are for observing, right buttons are for interrogating.
-If controlled by a Witch, you will observe the Witch's second target.

Investigative Results:
Sheriff: You cannot find evidence of wrongdoing. Your target seems innocent.
Investigator: Your target could be a Bodyguard, Godfather, Arsonist, Crusader, or Ranger.
Consigliere: Your target is a trained infantry soldier. They must be a Ranger.

Notifications:
"You've decided to observe Player1 tonight."
"You've decided to interrogate Player2 tonight."
"Player3 was dangerous, so you shot him!"
"You were shot by a Ranger!"

Changelog:

Looks to me like this is overpowered relative to the Bodyguard.

It will kill any mafia member except the Godfather who visits its target? Am I reading that right? Granted, it doesn't protect, but in terms of "number of townies dead" vs. "number of evils dead" it's unusually efficient.

EDIT: Yeah, I misread the role.

I don't see it is overpowered at all. It's better than the Bodyguard when it comes to the number of possible kills in a single night and inability to kill Town, but the downsides are that the target is not protected and the evildoer has to have been selected in the past; most games only last six nights, so the Ranger isn't given a lot of time to act either. The role seems relatively balanced. If others deem it as overpowered, one nerf you could give it is the ability to only counterattack a single evildoer that visits its observed target (also create a priority list if this is done).

Having a role be stronger with a more skilled player is a good thing. This also doesn't harm the town if a new player gets it and doesn't know what they're doing (unlike roles like Transporter).

I am thinking about making it have a Powerful attack also. Thoughts?

I've had a raging internal debate about the viability of "guess-check" killers for many years now and I've recently come to the conclusion that it's simply not a workable concept. This is due to an immense amount of potential swing. Given a strong player who knows how to easily identify evils, they could kill too many evil players, leaving an impact on the game that is too strong. Vice versa, given a weak player who is simply picking randomly, no impact will be left at all on the game.

Now, don't get me wrong, this is an issue that every single Town Killing role is currently dealing with in the current meta. The vigilante can kill 2 townies or 3 mafia, which is waaay too swingy. The veteran can kill every visiting role in the game all in one night! Once you put these into perspective, then the Ranger could easily fit in with the rest of the Town Killing alignment, but I refuse to lower my standards to the BMG level.

If you can present a prototype version of a guess-check killer that doesn't provide an immense amount of swing, then maybe I'd change my position.

I think this is OP, imagine that maf is GF,Mafioso,Janitor and Disguiser. You could wipe out 3 mafia in one night, No role should be able to do that under any circumstances

In fairness the idea of forger and janitor on the same target is stupid. So maybe consider this hypothetical scenario redundant
Edit:Changed it to disg

Honestly, this would be better if you were given a choice on observing and interrogating in a night

Fair warning, I know many of the ideas in this are pretty shitty/unbalanced, but I have a lot more knowledge of role mechanics and balancing now than I did then.

Currently Working On:
