Without the ability to silence the target, it's a horrible Ventriloquist. With that ability, it's a better Blackmailer. There is no happy medium here.

I suppose that is true, but in TOL, whenever somebody reveals incriminating information of any kind, they normally ask the person who said it if they were "trollboxed" (I think that's the term?). The ability still gets countered very easily.
