Is this better than Doctor in any way? It seems worse than Doctor.

yes because it can protect a mayor. this is a reverse doctor, its play style is different than the doctor.

The Mayor thing hardly counts - it's a specific interaction with a fairly rare role, and the "doctor can't protect Mayor" thing was a fairly recent change anyway (meant to nerf the Mayor).

So this role's main advantage is that it turns into a Vigilante the night it dies, giving it a bit of flexibility? That... doesn't seem that useful to me either.

This role never will be used as a TP, so might as well change the name to "Hunter" and play it like ONUW or Direwolf.
It was kinda just used as a Hunter role in that FM game you used it in anyway, maybe have it as a TK and can kill an attacker if they visit an attacked player (but doesn't protect the target).

the point of this role is to protect anyone who isn't confirmed town or protect players who play scummy. you can as well say that its nerfed doc but its really not as it offers a completely different way of playing.
you can also say that vig can kill town member then what its point, same for bg and vet. you can get a huge advantage if you successfully protecting someone you believe to be evil or an evil role and dying at the same night.
sure you can do the same with doctor but you will be more punished if you do that. doctor could potentially save evils too so its a stupid role then.
babysitter is a really known forum mafia role. you saw it here lately because I had brought it from another site. if you are playing babysitter just like doctor then you are doing it wrong.

In that case you're kind of flipping a coin as to whether to heal them or kill them. Either "always heal" (like a Doctor) or "always kill" (like a Vigilante) will necessarily be better than randomly being one or the other based on factors outside your control.

If a player is moderately scummy so you don't know whether to heal or kill them, the solution isn't to randomly either heal or kill them; the solution is to investigate them, which is a whole different role category.

Forum mafia roles can be underpowered or overpowered, and it's fine because the exact rolelist is fixed and agreed upon in advance. In Town of Salem, the rolelist is random, so whatever role is randomly generated needs to be similar in power to all the other roles that could have been randomly generated. This role is noticeably weaker than the Doctor, so it shouldn't be available to roll in a Town Protective or Random Town slot.
