Achievement rework.

So... I have a few suggestions about achievements and I wanted to post them here. If you have another suggestion about adding/removing/reworking achievements, please post it here.

The problem with the achievements is that most of them encourage bad plays, gamethrowing, or depend of luck. Only a few of them actually reward good plays. To prove this, I will quote Kikigiri:

All the general achievements are purely for being on the winning side. If you're not on your own, you can get them at random (especially the Townie ones.)

Same for all the Win as X achievements. I'm skipping those below, but all of them can be won just by being lucky enough to be on the winning side, even if you die N1.

The Escort achievements are where it really starts to go off the rails. One achievement is just for RBing anyone, anyone at all (I guess technically it's something you should be doing, but how do you not get that?) One achievement is for roleblocking yourself, which is totally random. And one achievement is for... dying to a SK, something you would almost never want to do deliberately!

Invest achievements are similar. One for "use your ability once", which is silly, and one for investigating yourself, which is random.

Jailors have the flawless achievement, which is good, and then the execute anyone achievement, which is not, and the "Die to a SK" achievement, which is insane and encourages you to actively suicide on a known SK.

Mayors I mentioned. All their achievements are bad. I'd argue revealing D1 is a more valid strategy than people think in some modes, although that's certainly controversial, but "Faith in the Town" and "Incognito" both flatly reward bad play.

The Medium achievements... uh, you have one for seancing the Arsonist, Godfather, and Serial Killer. What. What. These are just flatly all terrible and reward you for doing something that is almost always stupid. They ought to be something like Mayor, Veteran, and Vigilante or the like. (These achievements are also problematic in that they expose evils, which can be bad if there's a second Medium, but that's a deeper problem - IMHO achievements should be awarded at the end of the game and not revealed until then to avoid this.)

Retributionists have achievements for reviving Doctors, Sheriffs, and Jailors. Meh. The last one is obvious, but I'm not sure why they have achievements for the first two, especially for Sheriffs. Reviving a doc makes sense if you have a confirmed BG to pair them with, I guess, but since BGs are harder to confirm you'd usually be reviving a BG to do that instead. At least they're not completely awful like the Medium and Mayor ones.

The spy achievements are mostly random stuff you'll get just for being a Spy.

Veterans have one for not killing any Town, which is good, and then one for not alerting at all (usually bad) and one for killing three people without regard for what side they're on, which is also usually bad.

Vigilantes have an achievement for shooting three immunes - or for shooting the same immune three times. And they have one for... shooting themselves, which is both random and terrible!

BMers have an achievement for BMing themselves or another member of the Mafia.

Consigs have an achievement for finding the GF.

Consorts have all terrible achievements - RB yourself, RB the SK and die, and RB the Godfather. Wha? They have two achievements that are only possible with a transporter or witch, and all of their achievements are stuff you wouldn't want to have happen.

Disguisers have an achievement for displaying a fake role on death. This sounds good until you realize that it literally just means "die as a disguiser who visits every night."

Forgers, Framers, and Hypnotists all have achievements for targeting themselves, and another achievement for targeting a fellow Mafia member, both of which are random and both of which are undesirable. And Janitors have an achievement for cleaning themselves.

Mafioso have an achievement for being promoted to GF, which literally means they get an achievement for the GF dying. And yes, I have actually seen a Mafioso get their GF killed, deliberately, in order to get this achievement. (Of course I reported it, but the point is the achievement is bad.)

Arsonists have an achievement for igniting themselves.

Survivors have an achievement for never vesting.

Hex Master has an achievement for hexing a fellow Coven member.

Necromancer gets an achievement for reviving Pestilence. (I'm pointing this one out because while it's sometimes necessary, reanimating Pestilence makes the Necromancer die, and there's no real indication or warning of this.)

Pirates have an achievement for losing 10 duels (of course, it's Pirate, so all their achievements are totally random.)

Ambushers have achievements for ambushing Werewolves and Pestilence. As a reminder, Ambushers have only a basic attack and no defense, while Werewolves and Pest attack all visitors, so if you do either of these you'll die and the WW / Pest won't.

Crusaders likewise have an achievement for attacking Pestilence, which is, again, suicidal.

Psychics have an achievement for being RBed three times.

Anyway, my point is: This achievement would at least encourage good play. Many existing achievements don't even do that, and many are far more random to boot. Huge swaths of the achievements, especially for the Mafia, reward you for mostly-random bad stuff happening to you!

As you can see, only a few achievements reward skilled plays.
My suggestion is removing ALL the gamethrowing/silly achievements. Since some roles would have no achievements, I would also like to suggest some.

Achievement rework


First of all, every role should have an achievement for getting all its achievements. If a player gets that achievement, he should be rewarded with a lobby icon of the role (not the face of the skin. I mean the picture that appears at the left of the achievements). There should also be an achievement for having ALL achievements for ALL roles, which should be rewarded with something REALLY good. Of course, there should also be "Get all achievements of X faction".

Secondly, I would like to suggest the "loop" achievements. Players would be able to get this achievements infinite times, so they can be rewarded for their good plays. Also, once you get the achievement for winning 25 times with a role, the achievement for winning 5 times should become a loop achievement.

Thirdly, achievements should be displayed AFTER a game ends, so they can't spoil you the roles of certain players.

And finally, players shouldn't get achievements that they unlocked due to a party member. For example, if they are a sheriff, and one of their partymates is mafia, then they wouldn't get achievements for finding mafia. If a consigliere found a jailor, but he was a party member, he shouldn't get the achievement. This would make achievement farming way harder.

Now that I suggested it, I would like to show how the achievement list would be (I will only write the achievements that should be added/removed/modified. I won't write the "win x times" or "get all achievements" achievements):

- Be acquitted with at least 8 innocent votes. - I'm just a townie

- Heal a townie who was attacked (note that this achievement would only be given to you if you heal a town member instead of any player. Of course, achievements should be displayed after the game ends). - Need medical attention?

Jailor:

Sheriff:
- Remove "find someone not to be suspicious" and "find a member of the mafia".

- Find a werewolf. - The legend was real!
- Find 3 evildoers in a game (loop). - Law enforcer
- Find "not suspicious" someone who was suspicious the last night. Gotcha framer!

- Check a disguiser the night he died disguised as a town member. - It's a FAKE ONE!

Spy:
- Remove "see 4 mafia visits in 1 night" and "see a member of the mafia targeting you".
- Find someone who was attacked but his defense was too high. - He's immortal!
- Find someone who was killed by the serial killer he visited. - Guess who's dying tomorrow
- Find an arsonist who was cleaning the gas off of himself. - Still in danger
- Bug someone who received 3 feedback messages unrelated to his role in one night. - Party time

Transporter:
- Remove "transport yourself with someone else".
- Make a mafia member kill one of his teammates. - Mafia war

Vigilante:
- Remove "shoot yourself" and "shoot 3 immunes".

Crusader:

Consort:
- Remove "die to the sk you visited", "roleblock yourself" and "roleblock the godfather".

Framer:
- Remove "frame yourself" and "frame a mafia member".
- Frame someone who was being visited by a sheriff or investigator that night. - You fool
- Fool the same player 3 times in a game. - So predictable
- Frame the same target twice in a row, fooling the same player twice. - Nice try
- Fool 3 players in one game (loop). - Fool machine
(Fooling means framing the target of a sheriff or an investigator).

Godfather:
- Kill 2 town power roles during the first 3 nights. (seems luck-based, but I think good townreaders should be rewarded too, loop) - Power is weakness
- Kill a vigilante before he shoots a mafia member. - Threat avoided
- Win a game with your mafioso still alive. (loop) - Under my command

Janitor:
- Remove "win the game without cleaning any bodies" (seriously, this one is worse than the mayor achievements).

- Clean an investigator. - No more leads
- Clean 3 bodies in a single game. (loop) - Clean as a whistle

Mafioso:
- Remove "be promoted to godfather" and "win without dying or becoming the godfather".
- Kill the jailor who was jailing your godfather. - You can't jail my dad
- Win a game with your gf and you still alive (loop). - Loyal servant
- Kill at least 5 townies in a game under your godfather's command. (loop) - Let me handle it

Hypnotist:
-Remove "hypnotize yourself" and "hypnotize a mafia member".
- Make a lookout think he was roleblocked when he actually saw no visits, twice in a game. (loop) - It's not what it seems

Ambusher:
- Remove "ambush a werewolf" and "ambush pestilence".
- Ambush 3 town members in a single game. (loop) - Good townies stay at home
- Ambush a bodyguard. - I was waiting for you
- Ambush a trapper. - Got here first!

Amnesiac:
- Remember that you were a neutral killing role (or plaguebearer/Pestilence) and win the game (loop). - I hate everyone

- Remember that you were a coven member. - Magic remembrance

Arsonist:
- Remove "ignite youself". Add werewolf as a thing arsos need to kill in order to get "There can be only one".
- Have a solo win without a kingmaking scenario and without killing witches or survivors. (doesn't apply if you won against another NK) (loop) - Funeral pire
- Fool an investigator/consigliere. - This smells bad
- Fool an investigator/consigliere 3 times in a game. - Everyone wants to see us burning!

Executioner:
- Remove "be attacked 5 times in a game".
- Lynch your target with at least 5 townies voting guilty on him (loop). - Townies are killing each other
- Lynch your target with a difference of 5 votes. - He's so guilty
- Trick the mayor into lynching your target. - Convincing prosecutor

Werewolf:

Hex master:
- Remove "hex pestilence" and "hex coven".

Necromancer:
- Remove "reanimate Pestilence".
- Kill 4 players in a game without using the Necronomicon (loop). - I won't get my hands dirty

Poisoner:
- Poison 5 players in a game (loop). - Blight
- Poison a doctor who already selfhealed. - Who will heal you now?

Medusa:
- Stone 3 players in a night (loop). - A rockin party
- Stone 6 players in a game. - You rock
- Stone the jailor. - Jailhouse rock

And that's it. To sum up, what I suggest is:
- Add loop achievemnts.
- Remove gamethrowing/silly achievements.
- Give achievements for having all achievements.
- Add achievements based on skill and helping your team.
- Display achievements after the game ends, so they can't spoil you the roles of other players.
- Don't let party members farm achievements.
- Also, as qwertyuiopl suggested, you should only get your achievement if you are connected during the end of the game. This would discourage players to leave.

The ONE issue I have with some of these is that they give you information you otherwise wouldn't have (e.g. Escort role blocking a killing role, Medusa stoning a jailor, etc) that could help win. I know some achievements already do this (cough medium cough), but these would up the problem. So I suggest that all achievements only be viewable at the END of the game. (I think this has been suggested before, but I'm bringing it up again just in case.)

Here's a possible kicker- maybe if you get an achievement, you wouldn't get it if you left the game early. This might discourage people (especially mediums and important roles that could be revived) from leaving the game early when dead- just in case they'd gotten that one achievement they've been trying to get. The problem I see with this is that if you actually earn an achievement, but you have bad internet and you disconnect, you wouldn't get it. What do you think?

Other than that one problem, /support times a million.

Yup. I already suggested in my post that achievements should be given after the game ends. I wrote it in the doctor achievements, so I will highlight it. Your second suggestion is also great. I will add it to the post.

About your suggestions:
1- What would happen if someone buys one of the packs that give you 3 scrolls of each role? And why would somebody waste 38400 merit points in order to win an achievement and 100 MP?
2- Reach X elo sounds really good. I will add it to the post.
3- I'm not sure about having x friends. It could be easily abused. It would be better if you added someone because you like him, not because an achievement.
4- I guess the gf would be an exception, right? The only problem I see is that vamps would probably lose if they did that.

Agreed a lot of people will just game throw to get a Achievement.

Once mafia threw so they could get the juggernaut hitting the pestilence achievement.

Although some achievements are really hard, I would like to see a new rework. I don't really get joy out of earning these old achievements because they're so random.

I don't think thats fair when you evil because there is no medium/ret so it will make no difference if you leave.

No.... It discourages leaving. If you're evil and you did an achievement, you can stay till the end of the game to get it. Simple - it won't take you days long.

Juggernaut achievement

1.Get all the "Upgrades"
2.Win a game
3.Kill another NK
4.Win with a witch or a survivor
5.Kill all the Ti's role in-game

Right, I was scrolling down to the ingame achievement list, so I forgot about the juggernaut. About the leaving thing, players should only get their achievements if the stay until they win/lose. The only exception could be survivors or guardian angels after they die, since jesters and exes can't get an achievement if they die before winning.

Added achievements for juggernaut. What do you think about "attack a jailed player"? I thought all the visits failed on a jailed target. If the juggernaut can actually kill the jailed player, the achievement is fine, but if he can't it should be removed.
About the friends, how many would you suggest that should be needed in order to gain an achievement?
Also, what do you think about "be in a game with 14 friends"?

Also, what are the requirements for a suggestion in order to be implemented?

You could do
Kill 2 coven or mafia members in one night.
Kill 2 mafia members in one night. (Its racist to mafia kind)

Well... the thing is that mafia and juggernaut are not in the same gamemode (unless chaos). I wrote only coven because I was thinking in attacking a coven member who was being healed by the PM. Since mafia can't visit each other, I didn't include them. I forgot that he can kill 2 mafia members if they visit the same target.
I will replace "kill 2 coven members" with "kill a coven member who was being healed by the potion master" and add "kill 2 mafia members in one night".

I just noticed something. I added a "have a solo win without kingmakers" loop achievement for all NK, but it shouldn't be given to a player if he kills a witch/survivor in order to solo win. I'll edit that.
Also, do you have any suggestions for the names of the achievements?
