A comprehensive guide for the lookout

Postby OfficialMuttonChops » Wed May 28, 2014 4:36 pm

Lookout (Town Investigative)
Abilities:
- Watch one person at night to see who visits them.
Attributes:
- None.
Goal:
- Lynch every criminal and evildoer.

A lookout can often be an underrated tool in finding the evil roles. Hopefully the following tips will help your experience as a lookout:

1. Don't give yourself away at an early stage.
Whilst it can be tempting to announce your role at an early stage, remember that when you're announcing a role EVERYONE (Mafia, SK, Arsonist and Witch inclusive) can hear you. Although it might initially be a good idea, once a killing role knows you're a townie, they have the easiest job of killing you without worry.
It is therefore important that you keep your role hidden from all of the field.

2. Watching victims at night.
It's generally a good idea to watch high-priority people, as these have a higher chance of being visited.
However, at times it may be a good idea to watch players who aren't talking or contributing during town discussion - they're also likely to be targeted.

When you see multiple people visit a person, don't be too hasty to assume they're all evil, especially if the target is still alive. It may be useful to ask in chat the next day if anyone was healed/transported/jailed (as a Jailor appears to visit the person they jail). If you're still unsure about who is who and there are no better leads to follow, it may be worth watching the same person again to see if only one person visits and kills them. You can then deduce who the killer is and the roles of the previous visitors.

Example -
Spoiler: Person A is visited by Person B and Person C.
Person A is still alive, but says the next day to have been attacked whilst in jail.
The next night, Person A is visited by Person B and dies.
This makes Person B a killer, and Person C a jailor.

If you're still having trouble working out people's roles for certain, try to get in contact with them. You can ask them to perform their night action on whoever you want and see what happens.

Example - (as suggested by Arckas)
Spoiler: Person A is visited by Person B and Person C.
Person A tells the town they were attacked in jail.
You whisper to Person C and ask them to perform their night action on Person A again.
This time Person A is visited by only Person C, and Person A says they were jailed.
Therefore, Person B is a killer, and Person C is a jailor.

3. Record your findings and update them regularly.
It's a good habit to write any important findings in your will and to update your will each night.
Remember to write in short sentences and cut any irrelevant material out: this way the town can see important information more clearly.

It may be best for the town however not to write down exact roles - you may want to conceal the doctor's or jailor's identity so they are not targeted. Instead, you can write that they are innocent/town.

4. Saving yourself from death.
It can be quite intimidating if you're a top suspect to the town. Remember - don't reveal your role until you are voted up or you're in jail.
It's important to supply the town with hard evidence at this time; just saying you're lookout is not good enough as many evil roles like to hide as a "lookout".

Giving who you watched and who visited on nights is crucial, especially if the visited person has died. Be concise and clear; you have some time to talk freely.
Don't rush and lay all your information onto the table, supply the rest in your will (since after revealing your role you are likely to be targeted).
Also, if you're being hung by the town, remind them that an executioner may be at work (if there is one).

If there are the times where you don't seem to have any information, you can still state who you watched each night. It's better than nothing.

5. Be involved in discussion.
Talk to the town every day if you can, asking for leads or just generally being talkative. This makes you known in the town, and it's good if you can build up trust with the town members. Talking consistently also makes you less likely to be targeted for inactivity.
Also, remind people of evidence from wills you may have seen pop-up - it's crucial that the town use their hanging time wisely.

6. Stick around at least one night after death.
If there's a medium or retributionist alive in game, it can be useful for you to stick around. This is good practice for any town role.

When the medium talks to you, be punctual and answer their questions quickly. Supply any ignored information from your will or give your thoughts to who the evil roles are, and if you can, give evidence (e.g. Person A can't be an executioner as it's not in the role list).
Do the same if you're resurrected.

Well, that's about it!

What I mean by this is you still have the ability to work out who is who.
If you look at the example from Point 2, where multiple people visit, you can potentially work out a jailor or a doctor.

Point 2 Example wrote:Person A is visited by Person B and Person C.
Person A is still alive, but says the next day to have been attacked whilst in jail.
The next night, Person A is visited by Person B and dies.
This makes Person B a killer, and Person C a jailor.

Say if Person A was healed instead of jailed, that would make Person C a doctor instead.
Or if Person A was role-blocked: that would make Person C an escort/consort, etc.
Sorry for any confusion :P

Another thing you can do.
Make people with roles go to these people and if something happened to them, you have your role.

Ask the jailor to go to this person tonight
Person visits this person
This person was Jailed
Person is def jailor!
This only works with roles that can be notified though.

That's good advice, Arckas
Whispers are seen as suspicious by a lot of players so I don't know how you could tell them unless you publicly announce it (but again this may draw attention to you).
EDIT - Added to guide.
