Frequent Disconnection

Hi, I've never posted on forum before but I read the rules and I think I am posting this correctly. I apologise in advance if I am not.

I have never had a problem with TOS before but in the past 12 hours or so, I have been disconnected mid game at least a good 5 times. I don't know why, it always just takes me back to the login screen and the reason is not always the same, oddly enough. This has only happened once before, sometime after the last update, but it was only once throughout my several hours of gameplay. Tonight it's been weirdly frequent. I know it's not my internet, everything else works fine. Could this be a bug?

Been frequently getting disconnected in ranked games.

The message I get is "The existing connection has been forcibly closed by the remote host"

Getting annoying, pretty sure im racking up the reports from disconnecting.

This message does sound like a disconnect, it seems that there is something that kills the connection every now and then shortyl. I do not know on which side it is, but I know that I haven't encountered a message like that when I was playing.

screenshot of the error message I'm getting. I'm assuming many others are getting this message too since I noticed a rather large number of disconnects in ranked games since the update.

I'll be moving this thread to Steam bug reports.
This is a disconnect of many causes, either the net connection was cut or data got lost during its travel from yoru PC to the server, or the network was shortly changed, or something happened on the server, yet if its serversided there might be way more reports about this than there currently is.

I can confirm this has been happening to me as well. i mentioned this in another post but I'll put it here too.

I got the exact same message in a game just now and there isn't anything wrong with my internet

Yea this has been happening to me every 3rd or 4th game now. It's not ideal but I found that I never disconnect if I use the web browser version of the game. I'd recommend trying that until they come up with a fix.

I uninstalled the unity client and deleted the Town of Salem folder in my %appdata%.

I reinstalled the game and haven't had a single disconnect in the last 12 games I played. I'm not a programmer by any means but maybe there is a conflict with upgrading the old Town of Salem steam client with the new Unity client. A fresh clean re-install seemed to resolve all issues.

Disconnects are usually not a client issue, but based on your connection. This time the message clearly states, that you disconnected from the server. The client is still requiring a stable connection so even a dc for a split second could be enough for a dc.

That one might have been a disconnect from my internet. Since it was late at night... my internet sometimes does a reset or something around that time.

Logged in this morning to play a game using the unity client. The "An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host" message came back. This is the message I was receiving earlier. A fresh clean re-install did not seem to resolve the issue. Double checked to make sure the game was allowed through my firewall and it was, no issues there.

Neither am I. I do know for a fact that I have not disconnected once when using the browser based flash version of the game. And I've been playing nonstop for the last 2 days lmao. The unity version is whats causing me issues. It's possible I may need to do some port forwarding or something, idk.

I've noticed the other way around, I had a few freezes on both the flash clients (Browser, Steam) but had none with the unity Steam, yet.

I've had a few freezes and often had the game suddenly close. In particular, it often closes after I pick a name. I don't know why it happens but it keeps occurring.

Do you have any entries in the eventlog (windows) or the console (mac) about those crashes?

It just happened again a few minutes ago and I found this in the event viewer app.

Faulting application name: TownOfSalem.exe, version: 2018.2.21.8949, time stamp: 0x5c73f900
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.18362.476, time stamp: 0x83c3d83a
Exception code: 0xc0000005

Is this what you meant?

PS: I see in the event viewer 3 similar ToS crashes within the last 2 weeks.

That was around that, yes.
all similar, which means all because of the kernelbase.dll, or was there an other module affected?

I checked and one crash was different. One crash had:

Faulting application name: TownOfSalem.exe, version: 2018.2.0.30296, time stamp: 0x5b3ea610
Faulting module name: mono.dll, version: 1.0.0.1, time stamp: 0x5b1eb8e1
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000044506

The other 3 had:

Faulting application name: TownOfSalem.exe, version: 2018.2.21.8949, time stamp: 0x5c73f900
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.18362.476, time stamp: 0x83c3d83a
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000003a839

the faulting module, exception code and offset were identical.

how frequent are the crashes? If they are rather frequent, you could see if you activate the logfile for some additional info on the crash.

If making sure your drivers and OS are up to date doesn't solve the issue, it's likely a corrupted User Profile in Windows.

Unfortunately this bug report is something the Developers have to look into, as the clients themselves are getting forced-disconnected from the server for some reason or another.

I haven't heard an update since November 19th, but I'm assuming they're looking into this. Feel free to follow the advice of my fellow GMODS in the meantime.

For the records…

I got the same message in Turkish after logging in on Steam once today. I didn't modify any game files.

Soo... I experienced that same issue today. I was on ranked pratice and got disconnected by the remote host several times.

I decided to Enable the Player Log and see if the issue happens again, guess what? The game just got disconnected like that and I posted the log there. https://pastebin.com/ce65BDU9
After the error the game froze and didn't close when I tried to. It was running on steam, unfortunately I couldn't take a screenshot because the Windows froze as well... I don't know if that happened because I tried to leave the game or if that caused the game to disconnect it self on the last time.

Anyway, I restarted the PC and I'm afraid to play TOS now because I was disconnected like that too many times in a row. Afraid to be banned.
