Sabotage IV: The Sunken Depths

In this text based exploration game, you are placed in a customizable scenario with a specific goal to complete. The twist is that each player role has different abilities to achieve the goal and there are saboteurs in their ranks with their own agenda.

In each game, the main goal can be different whether its points to obtain, an item like say a key to a door, or even if there are too many or too few people present for the win scenario to occur. Each game can also follow a theme as well for those that enjoy a bit of lore with their games. Another factor at play is the roles as they can be customized to fit the theme as well and certain roles have advantages in game where certain others won't. What can make the game or break it are the alliances you make and the items you gather.

Gameplay

Objective

Earn enough points to gain access and/or meet the requirements to get the win scenario.

Point gain

Simply put you gain points through many different means. Game conditions can cause points to be gained or lost, every completed quest usually means at least one point gain, sometimes actions to other players, NPCs, or certain items earn you points, even some roles have special ways of obtaining points. The only real advice to give is to pay attention.

Quests

The host, NPCs, even some notes and items can provide a quest. If you complete them you get a reward, but there are a few catches too. Some quests are traps some times by the host, sometimes by a NPC that you may have ticked off, sometimes a role can provide a false quest, be suspicious and go with your gut. High risk but high rewards, prizes for quests can be item locations, knowledge of skills, maybe even a saboteur location!

Win Requirements

In every game of Sabotage, there are requirements to win. Most times there is a required number of players to be present for the win scenario to be accessed. Sometimes a particular knowledge gain is needed, or item to be found and gained.

Killing / Attacking Players

New mechanic
Direct or indirect attacks or killing will be handled through a new rock/paper/scissors system

Strength vs. Speed vs. Stealth

Strength is varied by items in an inventory, level of hunger, and exhaustion.
Strength is separated into Power (Offensive) and Resistance (Defensive). If a player is stronger than another the victim is Overpowered. If the victim has a higher Strength check they Resist the attack.
Power and Resistance will also apply to moving objects, completing tasks, resisting pain from injury.

Speed is varied by attire, weight, level of thirst, and amount of activity.
Speed is separated into Reflex and Endurance. Reflex levels will determine if a player will be able to react to a sudden event or scenario. Endurance level will determine how long a character can perform a repetitive or strenuous task. Player roles determine Speed levels

Stealth is factored in attire, weight, and inventory. Stealth is separated into Sneak and Awareness. Sneak will determine if you can perform an action without notice. Awareness is varied by a player's mental state and level of exhaustion. Awareness can determine if a player notices small details, movements, even intentions of some NPCs.

Items

Some roles have items already given to them. Others are more proficient with certain items than others. This does not mean that a particular role has an advantage. Most often these items can still be found on the map somewhere. It's up to luck and a little ingenuity for you to find them. Each player starts with a starting inventory of at least two items.

Knowledge

Knowledge is power obviously. Each role can start with a set knowledge, this can grant access to different points in the games or even access secret or hidden events. Knowledge can range from just about anything but a common example is Medical Knowledge. Usually knowledge can be separated into three categories, General, Basic, and Advanced. General knowledge can be gained from observing or of course in common sense for example, if you are cut, get something to disinfect the wound or stop the bleeding. Basic knowledge is most often a role given knowledge or obtained. Some items can only be used successfully with Basic knowledge. Advanced Knowledge can actually grant bypasses for a lack of items in certain scenarios. Advanced knowledge must be obtained in the games. Knowledge can be found in several forms of media throughout the games, knowledge is not role restricted and all knowledges given to roles can be found. There are also more types of knowledges to be found in game.

Events

Most actions or events will be scripted or adlibbed by the host. These events can be triggered by simple or complex actions. There are often secret events that can take place. These events can change the entire game if they are triggered, enabling total player wins or single player wins.

Role Basics

Stats

Strength - Ability to lift or move, Can be applied to fights to overpower your opponent, be it an enemy or another player.
Power and Resistance are categorized in Strength.

Speed - Ability to move or react to something going on. Some which high speed maybe able to dodge an attack. This can also determine who goes first in an event.
Reflex and Endurance are categorized in Speed.

Stealth - How quiet or unassuming your player's actions are. This counts to how you can sneak away and avoid fights, you can also pickpocket using this stat as well.
Sneak and Awareness are categorized in Stealth.

Friendliness - This stat determines your general presence to NPCs and enemies. High amounts of this stat make you approachable to NPCs, Low amounts make you look like a threat to enemies. High friendliness can make you ignorant to an NPCs intentions, Low friendliness can give you alerts to key parts of an NPCs intent.

Each roles stats take in effect to actions. Be aware of what someone claims, their role may be stronger, faster, or stealthier than you. Someone may be able to dodge an attack, overcome it, maybe even get the chance to attack without you knowing. These levels alter based on factors that effect them, but each roles natural levels will be announced.

There are no Good or Evil roles. It's up to the players digression how they want to play. The doc can be selfish and seek to only heal themselves and poison others, the cultist can have a change of heart and spare the soldier. It doesn't matter, you never know how your actions will affect the NPCs though.

Saboteur

These individuals are selected at random from the pool of players and will be given an objective, retrieve the documents, seize the data, obtain the [insert item here], and a general idea of the location of the objective. They will not be told who is on their team, but instead two of them will be given a set of code words to initialize a reveal location. It's up to them on how to make it not suspicious. As they discover allies, they have to complete quests to get more codes to find more allies should more exist in a game. As a general rule one in every 3 players will be a saboteur. Usually quests have to deal with items that are in a specific area or they may be on someone's person. The player will be alerted if they have a item that's targeted by a Saboteur. Best Strategy is to hide in plain sight.

Game Specific Conditions

Sabotage IV: The Sunken Depths
Setting

Taking place at the bottom of the sea in an advanced exploratory submarine, the players mission is the find a way back to the surface in two weeks time. Food and Water will be very limited, but there will be more to explore! The expedition was made to find the truth to the mystery of small section of the ocean suddenly becoming heavily oxygenated and occurring at an incredibly warmer temperature. Scans seem to indicate there is some sort of cavern that has opened from an undersea quake. What mysteries this will entail are up to our players to decide! But be careful, the tycoons that helped to fund this expedition may have secreted someone along to fulfill their own agenda.

Point and Win Conditions

Players
Whether or not your lives are in danger, your benefactors have paid to get results. You have two weeks so best to actually make the money worth it after all. The rescue pod is on the way and higher valued assets will take priority. The scanner in the lab has a direct feed to the surface that will record samples or artifacts as well as if they haven't been discovered or their value. Higher points mean a better chance of a seat on the pod, 10 points can guarantee you a seat, get too few and.... well you might not be all that worth remembering would you?

Saboteur
Well this isn't exactly what we had planned was it? Don't worry too much though, you do remember that secret we told you about the sub, yes?

Game Item Sampler

Medkit - Heals from most injuries

Oksea Grass - An odd form of seagrass that can provide a surge of oxygen when mixed with mildly acidic substances including human saliva.

Harpoon gun - A pneumatic gun that shoots a tethered harpoon with deadly accuracy.

Map
To be posted on Discord soon.

Special Conditions

Time
Day and Night do not exist in this game. However in real time a day phase will be 24 hours and a night phase will be 24 hours. Meaning the entire game is only to last a month. There may be breaks in between times because as host I will have other things going on that may not allow me available.

Vote scenarios
At certain points, or at moments that are optionally triggered by players. Voting decisions will come into play about what the group will do in a scenario. These votes will be upheld for a period of six hours real time, before players can go against the vote. This can only be done in actions, not in revealing information. Ex. the group present at a fork in the road can decide which path they will take, but they cannot vote for someone to tell the truth or reveal a lie.
