Why should anyone be excited about a new game from you?

Put any feedback about the game here.

Why should anyone be excited about a new game from you?

Postby SilverCruz » Fri Apr 30, 2021 7:33 pm

I've seen BMG defended as a "small indie company" too many times to excuse the neglect that this game is subject to. Talking to people and implementing balance changes is apparently too too much for a small team of, what, four people? Yet, here we are, with that allegation being rather at odds in the face of your apparent plans to build a whole new game.

Why do you expect this one is going to go any better? Look at how this one turned out. Checking right now, the game reports 3292 players and 111 rounds in action. Sure that might sound kind of big, but the peak amount of users on this forum (not even in-game, which would've certainly been larger) was 9942, and now the last time I checked there were 15 users who are registered or hidden. The Jailor has been a straight upgrade of Escort and Vigilante since release, the game has had no fallback plan for players leaving while alive except "Guess they'll die." since release, the Medium has had no fallback plan for dead players leaving the round since release. The Framer has been a complete jobber for years, the Mafioso only exists to make it harder to deadlock the Mafia when deadlocking should not exist in the first place, you have this ridiculous Ads-For-Play system that is allowing people to come in for free and make a mess using phony Facebook accounts, contradicting the reason you said you were going to leave the Free-To-Play model in the first place. For what? Some ad bucks? I guess it's okay to ruin the game experience for people who paid out of pocket to be here as long as somebody is paying you, huh?

That's not even getting into the neglect. You don't respond to this forum because it's "too toxic" and "too much work", with the only thing I've seen that could be construed as "toxicity" being not blindly accepting this game for what it is, and the "too much work" excuse, like the "small indie company" excuse, being at odds with what you're doing now. Maybe you could call this post "toxic", but I don't think so. I think what this post is, is making an attempt to tell you that you're already doing a terrible job with the game you already have, and I don't believe that you're cut out for making another one, and especially don't believe that you're capable as you are now of maintaining two games at once, which to be fair I don't really expect you to do. I expect that you'll keep neglecting this game at best, and just shut it down at worst to try to force the anemic playerbase it has to pay you again to do something else (as if they'll still have faith in you if you go that road), and sweep it under the rug to try to keep anyone from seeing your history when you're trying to prop up your new game.

This is my suggestion. Stop. This is not going to work. Please understand that this is not meant as an attack against any of you, it is meant as an estimation of the future based on the past. You have not proven capable of keeping the game you already have in good shape. Trying something from scratch will only destroy you because you seem to believe that you have more support than you really do. Please shift your focus onto doing something about this game's miserable experience (hey, like I suggested elsewhere, remove Ads-For-Play and replace it with Ads-For-Coven or something so people can't stroll in for free and ruin rounds on purpose but you still don't lose those ad bucks), and put this new project on the shelf until you have more people to work on it. This is textbook biting off more than you can chew, so please reconsider the decisions that you've made, and stop.
I know what I'm doing, generally, but I have no grace at all when things start to spin out of control.

I'd like to address the latter part, but I wouldn't know the first thing about that.

Not to mention that a reconnect button has been "coming soon" for how many years now?

I love this game but it's so sad to me to be here now when a few years ago the Role Ideas forum was bustling and FM was still running constantly. Alex is doing great bringing some life back into the Role Ideas section but everything else is pretty much dead.

I hate the excuses people make for BMG. "They're small :( If you dont like it let's see you do it better." Like, no that's not the point. It's so clear they don't want to work on this game anymore. It's NOT HARD to rework roles or role-lists. It's NOT HARD to add new roles. It's NOT HARD to advertise for this game. I don't think it would be hard at all for them to do balance updates/bug fixes monthly or every two months with a few cosmetics thrown in there, it's really not that complicated and yet people defend them blindly no matter how much they neglect the game.

I love this game and I have no doubt that they already plan on letting it die in favor of this new game. I wish they would put more effort into this game and advertising to bring the player base back...

The only thing I have to add is, if they really think they can go toe to toe with Among Us and the big boys, they're out of their mind.
Among Us succeeds because the devs care about the game and the community more than money. It also has gone out of its way to be more accessible.
Whereas TOS and BMG clearly never got the memo. Not about what their community wanted nor about accessibility.

Or else they wouldn't have made a new game instead of committing to fixing this one.

You know, if you really think about it. This reveal highlighted exactly why TOS failed. It took them what? 6 Fridays to say "Oh hey we're making a new game" with no real info whatsoever?
What info we do have on the game shows they're trying to directly compete with Among Us, but they're not providing enough info to show us if they'd do it well and they expect us to be hyped?
And for the weeks leading up to the reveal, we genuinely had 0 information that this was anything other than a graphics update- which highlights their complete lack of communication! Like they're trying to hype up a brand new game and all they got people thinking is "Oh hey! A graphics update" or "Hey a huge update to fix the game!"
It really shows how much hope people had for BMG and TOS just for BMG to go "LOL, Among Us popular so we gotta copy them and you guys HAVE to like it"
At best, it's naive. At worst? It's malicious. But we'll never know which because they never communicate! Ever!

Sorry I just have to reply to this.
This exact mindset is why TOS thrived during F2P.

Don't worry, you're not wrong. I just really want to highlight that this is a consistent opinion.

The only reason I bought the steam version recently despite being grandfathered in with my account is because my game suddenly started crashing at random times, usually after one or two nights in game. I posted this issue as a bug report, and considering it made the game unplayable for me you think someone would care to respond but not a word. If I didn't enjoy this game so much that would've been it

See, TOS has mostly fun gameplay. Unlike other games such as Among Us, there's a lot of room to deceive other people.

BMG however doesn't understand how important communication and the community is, so they've never helped Grandfather's.

Not anything necessarily new to add, but worth stating this:
They started revealing this game on March 12th, they have no real information available to us. Not whether the game is paid or free. Not what exactly they're making better from TOS- if anything. No actual dates, just estimates. Not if they're going to continue supporting this game or if they plan on anything with this game. They took almost 2 months to tease this game week after week, and they have absolutely nothing ready for us.

If I didn't know better, I'd say they literally just saw Among Us, said "We could do that" jokingly, and accidentally committed.

Hell, not trying say I'm dumb or anything but we don't even know what platforms the game will be on (obviously it won't be on console). Like will it be on Windows? Browser? Steam? Epic Games? Mobile? All of above?

These are things they should have had ready once they committed to it. How are they expecting to build hype if there's nothing really to hype about? Like, even the meme of TES6 (The Elder Scrolls 6) has a decent amount confirmed about it save for release info.

And the fact that none of the four have had anything to say about this thread here is... "predictable" is the nicest word I can use.

I hardly expect the usual defenders to reply to this.
This wasn't a good reveal at all and most of the community is either confused, or upset that there's no useful info.
When I asked people in game, they actually legitimately thought I was joking.

I would assume because one should use common sense in thinking that with a patch released a month ago, that of course they wouldn't shut down Town of Salem's server just because a game is being released this year, as with any other gaming company, indie or non. However with growing concern, they'd need to address that no, it won't shut down, so it's done in it's own separate passing comment.

EDIT: If necessary, I'll at some point make a FAQ saying "no, they won't shut the servers down" however it seems too little to actually make a FAQ at this time.

Smart move, thinking that it's not actually a common question that hey, what will happen to this game since there's a new one coming out.

Listen, it's already necessary, and it was from the moment it was revealed to be a new game.

And as much as I want to be nice, your comment comes off as you thinking you're hot shit as if I didn't have to go into a forum and scroll back a bit for that information.

At bare minimum, the question should have been answered when people asked the question in "Ask Questions".

So please, if you'd kindly make the much needed information available to everybody.

EDIT: I see the question was answered by you a couple hours after the fact, and roughly when you made your comment here.
Obviously you need to work on your hostility, considering it's already a commonly asked question and has been since the second it released and people found out about it. And for future reference, any info that a dev makes available in a subforum, do the community a solid and make it easier to access for everybody else. Nobody should have to dig to find, hey maybe this game isn't dying or other information such as that.

This here is likely why the Developers haven't commented on this thread, or any other similar; unnecessary hostility that wasn't already here to begin with.

I wasn't hostile at all. I made a comment, an observation. However you take that is your prerogative, not mine.

We know nothing about the current state of affairs of what will happen for ToS or for TiS, we're in the dark like everyone else until they release said information. The information about whether Town of Salem would stay up was revealed last night by a Developer. If you have questions, ask the Developers directly, but without this unnecessary hostility if you'd like an answer. Otherwise you're going to end up screaming into the void as you have been.

Cheers.

I'm sorry, you really, really can't pull this bullshit. Every time I've seen you comment on threads, it's unnecessarily hostile with your language. Such as but not limited to "I would assume because one should use common sense in thinking..." what? You think it's not a common question by now? Of course a developer had answered that question late last night- in a subforum which was constantly being filled up.

You think you "just making a comment" isn't hostile but no other mod in particular has this problem like you.
Other mods are professional and maybe think we should understand issues before wanting solutions, but not a single one is as openly hostile as you.

Just because you're in the dark doesn't mean anything realistically. You still have to give answers, even if they're ultimately unsatisfactory.
You think we're screaming into a void, but we're essentially voicing our opinions into a megaphone. People clearly see it, and I don't think you would have commented if you hadn't of seen it.

Also, for future reference- as a moderator of any game, you should be fully aware that anything you say is basically held against you. So as much as it sucks, you need to adopt that customer service attitude essentially. Since that's basically the field you're in anyways.
