Cannot connect to server On ipad mini 2

The screen gets darker and forever stays on the login screen with the prompt "connecting to server...". Tried restarting device and reinstalling app but didnt help.

Looking at the Wikipedia page it says it comes with iOS 7. Though reading further down I see that it can be updated to 8 and as of last month 9.3, sorry. I should have checked more carefully.
yeah its an easy confusion because its 2 or 3 years old. thats okay you didnt know
