VLDR's Identity and Memorable Moments.

Postby Metrion » Wed Oct 03, 2018 10:03 am

The title simply. What do you consider to be very memorable or iconic in the history of VLDR? I'm asking about:

  • Characters/players in a role
  • Events or chain of events
  • Things that make up VLDR's identity but aren't necessarily the game's rules.

These questions are subjective and I want to hear people's answers because it's both fun to think back and interesting to see what people think about VLDR.

Re: VLDR's Identity and Memorable Moments.

Postby Nellyfox » Wed Oct 03, 2018 12:26 pm

Xerxes and I actually talked about this a bit last night since I found an old list of my Top 10 VLDR Moments. I'll post that list and an updated version (as the old one is from September 2017) when I talk about memorable events.

I have a lot to say about VLDR; I love talking about the game as a whole because it's always been enjoyable for me, even if I'm prooobably one of the worst players to grace the player list. But, I've been here from the beginning, so I definitely remember a bunch about pretty much every game minus a few I didn't play in. So I guess this is a good chance to consolidate all of my thoughts into one post.

Memorable Characters/Players in a role

I'm going to separate this section into Characters, then Players. I really do enjoy the Character aspect of VLDR; I actually enjoy roleplaying as an activity and even if I dropped it years ago, it's nice that my favorite forum game can let me do it again. It's also interesting because players aren't themselves. They're playing a different character, and while I'm sure most people pretty much self-insert themselves into a VLDR character, it's not a set "Oh, I know this person would never betray me", because in that game, the person you choose to trust isn't exactly them.

To start off, I would like to talk about Roots. Roots is easily the best game of mine out of the three I've hosted. Despite the minor bumps Munch provided as well as the fact I hosted almost the entirity of the game while on a vacation in Florida (with finicky internet, and also not ignoring my family), the game turned out extremely well (perhaps not the ending, but hey, it happened, and I know for next time). Adding on, it's also one of my favorite games, perhaps #3 after VLDR2 and VLDR8. To those who didn't play in the game, I highly recommend giving it a read if you haven't done that.

The characters in the game themselves weren't entirely drastic, I'll give it that. However, almost every player really brought something to the game. Schultz and Animate had a bit of a friendship going on, as did Aeo and Xerxes, and Mel and Arc. One thing I love about hosting is knowing everything going down and seeing the relationships developed between different players in the game. I'm actually quite sad Munch took care of the hosting for the team that went through Door 4, aka "Team-Not-Drowning", because those four players had a really fun dynamic.

Phoenix was probably my favorite character that game. With full bias intended, because I absolutely adore Xerxes, Phoenix was very fun to watch and also write action posts for. I remember the tender scene shared between him and Aeolus just outside Door 7, as well as the moment he shared with Tiger and Lydia in the Solarium, preparing drinks for them all. I also enjoyed writing him in the ending post, though I enjoyed writing that ending post as a whole. Considering the game and its characters, I think it was a fitting end. The survivors got to relax after the trials they endured. What happens next is up to them (as we know, Acerola became a dolphin).

I'm going to give props (haha!) to Aeo that game as well. I know Aeo doesn't do the whole roleplay thing as much as other people do, but it was fun hosting for him for a change. He used his role for fun and to his advantage. The scuba-gear joke was gold, and hiding in the prop chest after the second puzzle phase was fun to watch unfold.

Now I'd like to talk about VLDR6. I wasn't entirely sure about the game at first, since the rolecards had a new style, as did the game, so it was to be expected. I really enjoyed playing as Tau, and when I got my role a month or two in advance, I didn't really expect her to, well, be a lesbian. Blame Rock for that, as he pretty much asked if our characters could be in a relationship right as the game started. And little did he know that desire would come back to haunt him as I happened to fall in love with Tau as a character, and also Honda by association. Tau is also, technically, the only character to have played in multiple Nonary Games, as she came back in VLDR9. I did purely bring her back to die, and that really influenced how I played that game. I tried to win, yes, but I took more risks than I normally would, because whether or not I lived or died, it didn't matter to me. Plus, Rock could have won the game for us still if I did die. He didn't, but he could have!

Regarding players as a role, I can think of several key player/role combinations. However, one sticks out above the rest: Met playing as the Cleaver in VLDR8. Complete with custom portraits, Met really went into the game - hard. He definitely deserved the win. Well, at least after the second AB Game of that game, when he killed Animate. Still, Met added suspense to the game, and even though he not only kept me hostage and ultimately killed me, I enjoyed the game, a lot. Met's performance plus some other events in that game is why VLDR8 is my favorite VLDR game.

And, not that it really matters, but I'm pretty sure I hold the title of most repeat roles. I've been Esper three times (VLDR1, VLDR4, VLDR13). Swear I had it a fourth time but I can't find any confirmation on that. Doesn't really matter. So I'm basically the VLDR Esper.

Memorable Events or Chain of Events

Alright. This is a pretty broad topic all things considered, because an event can be anything. And what's extremely interesting is some people may not have even known these events happened because they were absent for them, or just weren't in the game. Anyway, here's my old Top 10 VLDR Events list:

Spoiler: 1. Casino with Hip (VLDR2)
2. Dani giving Met the bullet (VLDR8)
3. Kitchen Puzzle (VLDR2)
4. Roaming phase 2 (VLDR12/Ambisin)
5. Grenade shenanigans (VLDR14/Mortality)
6. My death (VLDR12/Ambisin)
7. Gym (VLDR5)
8. southern_wolf_cave (VLDR18/Box 18)
9. Sarah's death (VLDR2)
10. End game Massacre (VLDR2)

Honorable mentions: Royal Promenade (VLDR14/Roots), Locking Medic in the Pod (VLDR1), Schultz's awful luck (VLDR14/Roots), Roaming phase 1 (VLDR8), Roaming phase 2 (VLDR18/Box 18), Munch's death (VLDR11/Echoes)

This list is a year old, and I have to say it's terribly outdated...so I made a new list of my favorite moments:

Spoiler: 1. Casino with Hip (VLDR2)
2. Taubaki (VLDR6)
3. Rio (VLDR5)
4. Wheelhouse Puzzle (Roots)
5. Xerxes OTP (GAIA)
6. The Gym (VLDR5)
7. Nelly! Stop! (VLDR12)
8. southern_wolf_cave (Box 18)
9. Endgame (VLDR8)

There's certainly a lot going on here...and while some aren't entirely that great, I'd still like to elaborate on why I think these are the top events in VLDR for me.

    1. I'm going to be skipping this one, because I'll be talking about VLDR2 as a whole below.

    2. I've already touched on Taubaki a bit, but I will simply reiterate: I fell in love with Tau in VLDR6. She was extremely fun to play once Rock started getting involved with her in the second roaming phase. I also enjoy her dynamic with Honda - in case anyone doesn't know why VLDR6 finally ended after months of nothing, Rock had Honda kill herself. I am almost positive the reason for this is because Honda had to kill Tau, and, let's be honest, that wasn't going to happen. I'm glad Tau died in VLDR9 so she could be with Honda again, up in the sky...

    3. Rio is easily one of my favorite aspects of VLDR, and she has also been here from the beginning. As a bit of context, the reason I played in VLDR1 was because Met told me to join. I hadn't even heard of Zero Escape prior to this, so Met told me to watch a playthrough of Virtue's Last Reward, which the game was based on. VLDR1 took every element (including roles) from VLDR1, so I was able to hold my own with this fresh new knowledge I gained from watching the let's play. One thing from that game was the Rec Room puzzle, which I was apart of. The Rec Room contained a remote that just wouldn't do anything for me, so I blamed my lack of progression of the puzzle on it (and also my two partners were inactive). After finally realizing what I had to do, I held onto the remote with some sort of love-hate relationship. So, of course, being the youngster I was, I tried to turn the remote into a VLDR inside joke. Met delivered, as he let me start off the game with the remote in VLDR2. During that game, Met allowed me to have several features on it. It kept its Rec Room control purpose, and also gained a leash, a comb, and a built-in nerf gun. The remote was absent until VLDR5, where Aeo gave her several more upgrades, including a confetti gun, laugh track, and the death beam I wanted for so long (which was legal, because I was a Believer that couldn't kill). The remote, who I have since dubbed Rio (after my favorite song, and because I can call her a Riomote), has certainly become a staple in VLDR for my person, which is obviously why she made this list.

    4. I truly believe the Wheelhouse in Roots was the highlight of the game, perhaps after Team-Not-Drowning. I believe the Wheelhouse puzzle was clever, especially with the unintentional pun. I themed the first part of the puzzle around colors because I love color and working with color (this is the pun - color wheel, wheelhouse), and the second part of the puzzle was game trivia. The game trivia, especially with the threat of coming all this way only to lose the game, had the group work together. Everyone went through different events and puzzles, which I used to make the different trivia questions. It was also just fun to host the room in the thread. Glad it wasn't left in PM, honestly.

    5. Oh boy...I'm not sure I can touch on this one because it is not entirely PG. Well, Xerxes knows, and I know, so that's what is important in the end. One thing I can touch on here was telling Xerxes I knew what his role was, cause I apparently caused him great panic, and I live for that, baby!

    6. Haha oh boy. This part of VLDR5 was extremely scary, yet it's pretty funny to look back on. After becoming frustrated with Rock I wandered around trying to find someone else to no avail until Hip wouldn't let me leave the gym. Why? Because I had to find my attacker. As far as I knew, I was alone in the room, and being unable to kill other players or defend myself (I didn't have anything except maybe a glass shard), I thought it was game over for me. I found Pretzel in a locker, who jumped out at me, capturing me under a net. I panicked to Aeo over Skype (those logs are available here for those interested), who couldn't do anything because he wasn't hosting roaming. In the end, I had to leave to sleep, but the next morning Pretzel removed the net and let me go. Terrifying in the moment, hilarious to remember.

    7. This one's just personal amusement. I told Munch to leave the room so I could finally check Mel's inventory, but he immediately rushed back with Schultz in tow and sent those two words as a single PM. No other explanation. Schultz followed up with "Show your axe!". I still have Munch's PM saved. It's iconic.

    8. Box 18 aka VLDR19 wasn't exactly that great of a game, but I do think the Q room made it at least a little fun. I let Sarah and Aeo play a little adventure game that was kind of D&D but not because I had never played D&D before. The two had fun with it, as did I.

    9. This one I already touched on a little earlier when talking about Cleaver!Met. There was a lot of suspense from when I threw my smoke bomb in a room and ended up stabbing Rock. After the third puzzle, things got super tense, and that's what VLDR is all about.

I'm dedicating an entire section to VLDR2 because it is very easily the best VLDR game, or if you do not think so, you have to admit it is extremely iconic in its own way. There are a great handful of things that give VLDR2 these titles, so I'd like to bring up some of the memorable events from that game:

    1. There were shenanigans from the start of the game. Met had prepped an entire new pool of roles and allowed several of us to give our criticisms on them. I was one of these people. Met then allowed those of us that did review the roles to play in VLDR2, which had no role talk and no public role list. So some players had an advantage over others because of this knowledge we should not have gotten, but at the same time, even if someone never looked at the roles before the game, everyone seemed to know what each other were talking about. Also, apparently Hip knew Aqua's role becaue Met PM'd it to him, or something.

    2. The kitchen puzzle was pretty spectacular. I remember being in a skype call during this puzzle, and Arckas and Hip, who were in the room, suddenly burst out laughing. It had to do with their puzzle, and I'm pretty sure that was either when Aqua attacked Hip, or Hip accidentally publicly submitted the fact he had grenades. Maybe both.

    3. Sarah's death was pretty iconic, for it was 100% illegal. Boom randomly gave me a greknife (a grenade and knife mixture), which Sarah stole off of me (which she could do as a Maniac, which is the role she became after killing Ciara the phase prior). She then threw it at Aeo, who retaliated by shooting her. Aeo's retaliation was an automatic process by Met when Sarah threw the greknife. However, Aeo's role states that, while yes, he will instinctively shoot if he witnesses a murder, he won't if he is the one who is being targeted. Thanks Met!

    4. The Casino. This wasn't going to go well as Hip and I stopped outside the room's door, because Hip wanted to give me a nice hug. Some romantic tension really built between us, and the kicker was we both tried to stab each other while deep in a loving kiss. Great minds think alike. Hip and I formed a truce (which we should have already had seeing during the first roaming phase I established an alliance between us and Arckas) and figured out a plan to get Hip's axe back. Thus, we hit endgame.

    5. Endgame! Probably the best part of VLDR2. We leave our puzzle rooms to discover Aeo knocked out his two partners, and also me and Hip were handcuffed to each other. We really wanted Arckas to cut the chain with the axe, but Aeo decided to step up and use a blowtorch to separate us. Panicking because this wasn't part of the plan, I stabbed Aeo between the eyes. This set off a chain reaction of killing as Arckas killed Hip, then Kat killed me, and everything else went down in a big brawl. I ended up winning, as did Arckas and Hip, so my early game alliance worked out in the end!

Things that make up VLDR's identity but aren't necessarily the game's rules.

The quote walls. I'm not really sure how many people actually read the quote walls or even care that I try and prepare one every game, but I love documenting the highlights of my time in the game. It also allows people to perhaps see what I went through, if they weren't around for certain events. Personally, I enjoy looking back on and reading my quote walls for every game. It refreshes my memory quite a bit, and also acts as documentation of things that happened in PMs that were deleted to make room for the next game.

In conclusion...as you can see, I have quite a lot to say about VLDR. And I'm sure I haven't even covered everything I could talk about. But as far as this thread goes, well, here's what I think is memorable. I'd like to see what other people find memorable about VLDR, because it's such a dynamic game with a nice community. You guys are the best.

I've probably forgotten more stuff than some people know about VLDR so I'll try to answer my best and follow up Nelly's behemoth so other people don't have to.

Players/Characters

Aeolian (Junichi Satou) Was actually the second most memorable character from ABFR. There were a lot of shenanigans centered around his cigarettes which he had to smoke or go into a terrible withdrawal. There was a lot of tension because he carried a gun too. I remember Aeo was as per usual a tough customer and took action into his own hands.

Raiden When Vale had to be replaced and it was late into ABFR I ended up replacing the slot with an alternate account created for the sole purpose of playing Raiden; RaidenNo11. Raiden has since become somewhat of an inside joke.

Void of things I forgot.

Arckas (Shakespeare) What a character. Talking down and letting a killer live while running loops around the rest of the players about it. It was very entertaining to watch and he made the game 100% more interesting for it. The character itself was looking rough because of the old speach but turned out great once fleshed out.

Events

The first radical bomb

VLDR2 Bloodbath

Gascoigne's Run

Russo the Unstoppable / TiT Endfight

Vasuva's and Akira's roaming 2

VLDR's Identity

A fire axe Originally just a random bad ending in 999. The fire axe has grown to be the most iconic and infamous weapon in the game. There was a time it was more scary than a loaded revovler. Nothing makes people say "oh damn" quite like it and Ithink it's worked it's way into being a part of VLDR's identity for this reason.

So since anything I write will be put to shame by the giant wall Nelly made, I guess it's just best to get it over with and not overthink what I'm writing here. That and I'm being bullied into making it by Met and Nelly.

So to start off, I think the most memorable thing for me games wise is the fact that any evil or killing role ends up with me just losing and being bad at being evil. Then I get neutral roles and try not to kill and end up having to kill one person a game because of circumstances and winning. Oddly enough, I've never gotten a good role even though I'm the only one that plays that way regardless of what I get. Then there's also the fact that I'm probably the easiest person to manipulate in the entire playerbase like betraying the player that always ally votes for funsies.

Characters:

As for characters, I did did enjoy playing Honda just because it was fun to try and avoid having to kill anyone as a role built to force me to kill. It just goes to show my playstyle is absolutely the worst whenever I get an evil role. VLDR 9 cements that fact.

I also really enjoyed what Arckas tried doing as Rita in my last game even if I disagree with the sentiment of kill as soon as you're able to. It was interesting to see him try and play a character like that and I'd have liked to see how it would have turned out if he hadn't pulled the murder card so early.

Events:
Literally every time I'm a neutral role and somehow luck my way into winning when really I thought I wasn't going to.

But bluffing Met in VLDR8 was great even if it ended up being worthless because somebody decided to go back into a fight when they were just saved from the jaws of death.

Another standout moment to me was Met in my last game somehow being an all seeing omnipotent godhand since he ended up being the reason why the evil roles got destoryed super hard. Also Met's roles that game were stupid considering he highballed almost every dice interaction he was in until the end.

And I also enjoyed the mess Nelly and I caused in the game we cohosted because we had someone die from a bomb during the first roaming when they shouldn't have. This one is a bit fuzzy because it's been a while, but it's pretty hilarious in hindsight.

Anyway, I think the defining part of VLDR is the inevitable fallout that happens mid to late game where people start dying and the game ends up becoming a spooky time for everyone that's not a killing role. I know that's the time where I feel my decisions as the token good character have the most impact as I try to ensure that everything turns out mostly okay.

Wow nelly
U rlly dont do shit by halves do you

Setting unreasonable standards smh

I really cant top that but whatever, I got some fucking lemonade and an outlet to talk about vldr to so lifes fuckin fantabulous, lets go
Spoiler: I've only been around since like. The second half of games? I think. Started with roots and never looked back.
Roots, by the way, even if Nelly already covered it, phenomenal game.

Vldr is fucking iconic in of itself. Like, despite the general framework of rules for a game, you can go tits wild. None of em ever turn out the same, or have the same events, each of em are unique as SHIT. Its fun to talk about your viewpoint of a game with people who also played the game, cause yaknow, you're never getting the full picture. Theres so much action goin on at once man, its fucking wild. The postgame chats are almost as iconic as the actual fucking events of the game lol.

Everyone I've played vldr with has been absolutely phenomenal bastards, and even if they weren't, well, I have the full ability to completely deck them if need be. Thats also a fun part. Solving disagreements with violence!! Nothing like waiting for the host to deliver their verdict to get the blood pumping. Looking back on action scenes is so weird, cause in the moment it seems do fucking tense.

Like. I wanna talk about yknow, the specifics. But theres so much I could talk about via the fucking..just the goddamn game itself man. Its so tasty. Just the absolute shit my dude.

Ok ok. You fucking know how funny it is to play vldr? I feel like an Author having to google the best way to kill somebody. What's the ideal way to nonlethally take someone down. How exactly can I repurpose an office chair. How to weaponizea kitchen. What are the exact steps to treat a leg wound. Its WILD.

Its kinda hard to rp rp without being able to describe your actions without host intervention, but it works out. Plenty of iconic moments in the middle of action. Lookin at you, trusty frying pan.

The most obvious Iconic role I can think of is Cleaver. Like Armor maybe would come second. But anytime you see someone pull out a fireaxe, you KNOW it means absolutely no good, unless you're the one with the axe. Its fucking infamous by now. That and the injection gun.
Idk what kinda weapon shenanigans people are gonna get into next but I have a few good ideas.

So, I'd like to make a follow-up to my memorable behemoth. I've been sitting on the rest of the moments that I forgot to mention when completely infodumping everything before (which is kind of ironic, given what the thread is about). This time, instead of going by prompt specifically, I'm going to separate this post by game, because it's easier to cover things when they're all together instead of spread apart. I'm gonna keep this in a bit of a bullet-pointed format so it's easier to read this time.

VLDR2

Yeah, I know. You're probably wondering how, even after everything in my last post, I forgot things about VLDR2. In my defense, VLDR2 is so complex and massive that it might as well be a scholarly text that students analyze for papers. So, here are some things I forgot to bring up:

Arckas was definitely the MVP of the game. He played his role brilliantly and used game mechanics to his advantage. Aeo threatening to betray him if he killed Kat after being voted most trustworthy was exactly what he wanted, and exactly what he did. Not only that, but we also effectively provided him a right-hand man to help kindle mistrust and chaos within the group. Chaotic indeed.

Doug and Lucy were pretty memorable as well. Doug was a shovel Sarah found in the garden, while Lucy was Hip's fireaxe. There haven't been many if any shovels since VLDR2, but I like to refer to fireaxes as Lucy sometimes.

VLDR4.5

LoF's wacky shenanigans for hosting the game were memorable enough I suppose, and as far as the preservation of VLDR goes, I'm upset I did not save VLDR4 and VLDR4.5 from pruning. But, I do have a quote wall for VLDR4.5, previously unreleased, that I will share here:

Spoiler:

VLDR8

My favorite VLDR, and yet I forgot perhaps the only other thing rivaling Met's cleaver play:

Dani, in my opinion, is the most underrated player of VLDR. I am glad that I was able to introduce the game to her. She may never look like a threat, but the shenanigans she gets herself into are incredible. In VLDR8 she was very trusting, even going as far to give Met, a confirmed killer, a bullet out of nowhere, in front of everyone. She also mentioned part of a roaming phase to our friends offline, for I received a text from our mom telling me to go save her, which is perhaps the most hilarious case of cheating I've ever witnessed of anything.

VLDR10

I was really disappointed this game didn't get very far, because I enjoyed my role and the start of my character. Although the game was short, I did have a quotewall for it, also previously unreleased:

VLDR13

One more thing I forgot to mention from this game:

Mel turning out to be Cleaver was a twist I absolutely didn't expect. When I entered the Garden, I immediately received a PM from Mel calling to kill me and Rhazh with her axe. The shed was destoryed and Schultz had already died (ironically enough, he was singing Rio under the fallen shed hoping I'd come along, and I did completely by chance). I panicked and threw a poisoned dart at Mel, then got the heck out of dodge. Apparently it's what helped Rhazh take her down.

VLDR14

    There's a restaurant behind door 6.

Alright, that should cover pretty much everything I forgot to mention. I'm not going to make a third post if there ends up being things I missed, again.

I haven't been a part of that many games (I've only played in two games and hosted one, not counting current games and planned games) but there are a couple moments

-Pretty much everything in the VLDR Conspirator PM chat. Shame all those PMs got deleted over the course of 4 years.
-The bloodbath at the end of VLDR2. I went from 0 to 100 real fast and killed 4 people. All while at my family dinner at my grandmother's house. I remember having to constantly make excuses for myself to check my phone. I think the internet wasn't working or something and my younger cousin from out of town wanted to use the computer to I used that as en excuse to try and fix the computer for about 30 minutes.
-Picking up so many items in Aeolian's game that an item limit had to be introduced. In VLDR2 I had almost no items so I wanted to have a more useful inventory, so I picked up literally everything I could find. My role card gave me 3 extra inventory spots, but there was no defined limit so I was like "infinity plus 3 is still infinity". Then when a limit was put in place I tried to rid myself of some useless junk, got blown up by a bomb and then killed by munch.

And then there was VLDR4 / VLDR4.5. Man, that was a complete shitshow from my perspective.
So much went wrong or didn't go as I had thought it would, and there was a lot going on.

This isn't so much an iconic or memorable moment, but I feel that it deserves mentioning so I'll put what I learned about hosting from that game because I did pretty much everything a host should not do in a spoiler
Spoiler: -Put in too many crazy mechanics
-Put in so many stats and stuff that I couldn't manage it all past the first roaming phase
-Change stuff midgame
-Add stuff midgame (anybody remember the secret vents found partway through the game? Those weren't originally there but I wanted to reward Hip for digging up the floor in the infirmary so I added in a bunch of vents)
-Changing forums midgame (that was a major disaster because the PM and board system didn't act in the same way so people got confused and it ultimately led to the game being abandoned)
-Having puzzles that were literally impossible. That garden puzzle took about 3 weeks I think. I'm kinda glad nobody made it to the end and the game got canned because the final puzzle was not going to be solved in the time limit - not a chance. It was way too hard. I thought the garden was moderate in difficulty compared to the final puzzle which I had as difficult. Also didn't help that I put almost no hints or guidance in the puzzle rooms and just assumed people would follow the same obscure logical thought process as I did, or made assumptions about external common knowledge that clearly was not there.
-Having traitors in the game. In a game with killing roles, there really was no need for traitors.
-Not having actually made enough puzzle rooms. I remember some rooms were super bland with literally nothing in them because I ran out of ideas and decided to host the game before it was fully ready
