Hey, they're able to take care of themselves. This probably isn't even a big decision anyway. Don't worry about it.

They're intelligent. We should just go.

Jana, Bokke, and Ted scan and leave.

Ariadne takes Foster and Paisley and goes to scan. Paisley scans after her, and then Emilio yoinks Foster away from the chain.

There we go.

Emilio dusts off his hands on his suit

You two are the people behind this, aren’t you? Foster the science, and Wolfgang the memory alteration. Correct?

Foster pinches the bridge of his nose, using the other hand to gesture to the Escape door.

The door is right there. You sure you really want to talk about this? God, you're one persistent bastard.

I mainly wanted a response from Wolfgang, but he’s as dead as ever.

Emilios arm morphs into a sword and he waves it in front of Wolfgangs face

I mainly wanted to thank you two for these limbs. As Intold you Foster, it’s good for my line of work. Business will boom.

He dad grips Foster

You’re going places with this technology. Pursue it as far as you can see it.

He glares at Wolfgang

But don’t expect me to feel sorry for you after your associate killed himself. That’s all I had to say. Figured I would say it now, since I’m leaving and not turning back.

Emilio scans and leaves.

Foster scoffs, then allows Wolfgang to scan and leave. Foster turns towards the dorms for a brief moment, then scans and leaves as well.

The door closes.

Please do not post.

The twelve participants enter a sort of lobby. The floor is constructed of large, shiny tiles. There is some sort of reception desk in the center of the room along the wall. Potted plants decorate the room as an accent; it is impossible to tell if they are real or fake at first glance. The reception desk is stocked with writing utensils that cause Emilio to scoff an "of course" as well as a shut off computer, and more importantly, an envelope with a wax seal.

Despite lingering for the half hour in here, no one has touched the envelope. Foster approaches it and takes it, then carefully opens it up. Inside is a letter.

To the Capital Scientists,

If you are reading this, this means you have survived the Ambidex Game. Congratulations are in order. This is Foster Levant speaking to you through this letter. Please read carefully and take note of everything written here.

Your first question may be why you have limited amnesia (if you do). The direct cause of this is unknown. All we know is when Kiba altered their makeup, they lost memories of the most recent years of their life. As we are following Kiba's procedure to a T, it is extremely likely you will all experience this same memory loss. You will not remember this, however we took preparations to address this after the experiment concluded. Each of you were assigned a top rated therapist before the experiment began that will assist you in recovering your memories. We do not know if you will get your memories back completely, but it doesn't hurt to try. The therapists are waiting in the Capital Courtyard. Follow the map enclosed in this letter to figure out how to get there.

You may have additional questions you would like answered. I will answer a few that come to mind. If you have any further questions, you can try and ask Com about them. Now that the experiment is over, his limitations have been lifted. For now, though...

One, who is Kiba? Kiba Quetzal graduated from the Capital University with a degree in biology and minors in chemistry and psychology. They performed extreme experiments that caught the attention of King Sterling and the other Capital Scientists (including some of you). They were hired and performed terrific feats, until they took their life after experiencing extreme stress from their amnesia. May Renegade rest your soul, Kiba.

Two, what is the Spectrum? As it stands, the Spectrum is defined as "an invisible force influencing the behavior in humans." More research is going into this phenomena, but as of now, we are unable to determine why the Spectrum exists and how it does what it does. We have suspicions that it is a will of the Holy Renegade.

Third, what are the Capital Scientists? The Capital Scientists are a royally funded branch of scientists that have access to the latest technology and near limitless funding and are given extreme lenience in what sorts of experiments they can perform. All of twelve of you are technically government employees, and great at what you do.

Fourth, who is Fury? Fury is an "artificially" engineered animal that Oliver created for us. I trained her to seek out people with negative Spectrums and single them out, as that is what we were trying to avoid in the end.

Which brings me to the fifth question, what was this experiment? In short, as I am running out of room here, this experiment was supposed to nicely integrate you all back into society, as to not fall victim to the ailments that drove Kiba to suicide. As your therapist for more information, or Com.

Take the map and proceed to the Capital Courtyard. Your life awaits.

Signed,
Foster Levant

Spectrum Calculations Guide
Spoiler: Overview

All players start with a Spectrum value of 0. Depending on calculated events that occur during the game, this Spectrum value will shift into either a positive or a negative integer. Good Events will provide a positive shift, while Bad Events will provide a negative shift. The shifts are not static and will be calculated by rolling a die.

The route players end up in is determined by their Spectrum. Entering a Spectrum of 50 or more will take players to their Good Route, while entering a Spectrum of -50 or less will take players to their Bad Route. Reaching a Spectrum value of 0, or crossing to the opposing signum, will return players to their Neutral Route.

Prerequisites

Some roles have a requirement before being able to leave their Neutral Route.

Staged must use their Pseudocide ability.

Spirit must currently be tracking a living player.

Recruit must have handed off their friendship bracelet and opened a pair chat with another player.

Modifiers

When in their Bad Route, Vision, Translucent, and Shade receive 1.5x Spectrum shift values when experiencing Good Events, and 0.5x when experiencing Bad Events, rounded up.

The following groups of roles will receive +3/-3 to all character interaction and Ambidex Game rolls with each other:

    Blaze & Fury

    Altered & Rigger

    Vision & Translucent & Shade

    Plague & Shifter

    Spirit & Recruit

    Staged & Imposter

Ambidex Game Votes

There are several factors that can influence the Ambidex Game, and thus the following is true:

Voting against a team of dead players does not provide a Spectrum shift.

The shifts occur per voter, based on their individual vote, NOT the actual team vote.

Good Events

Choosing to vote ally in the AB Game (d20).
All unmodified shifts will be greater than 10.
Being affected by Rigger's Storytelling ability will half the Spectrum shift.
    Positive character development (d10).
At the judgment of the host. This may include discussing character lore, agreeing to stick together during a phase, or having a conversation end on a positive note.
    Helping an injured player (d12).
Attempting but failing to improve their state (e.g., Theta helping Franca in TFW) will roll with the d6.
Killing a player on their Bad Route (d20).
      Positive Fury interaction (d6).
Applies only to the first encounter, with the exception of Blaze.
Answering "Infinity" to What is death to you?
        Sets Spectrum to 10.
Recruit only: handing off the friendship bracelet (d10).
Plague only: save a player from death (d10).
Applies only when in the Good Route.
Spirit only: tracked player lives to the end of Roaming (d10).
Applies only when in the Neutral Route.

      Bad Events

Choosing to vote betray in the AB Game.
All unmodified shifts will be greater than 10.
Betraying twice, no matter the outcome of the AB Game, will automatically place a player in their Bad Route (sets Spectrum to -50).
Being affected by Rigger's Storytelling ability will half the Spectrum shift.
        Negative character developemt (d10).
At the judgment of the host. This may include unprovoked fights, bickering, or disagreement.
        Attacking another player (d12).
This does not include acts of self-defense.
        Killing another player (d20).
Spirit killing the player who killed their target will receive no shift.
        Negative Fury interaction (d6).
Applies only to the first encounter, with the exception of Blaze.
        Attacking Fury (d12).
Does not apply to Blaze when in the Bad Route.
Answering "Oblivion" to What is death to you?
          Sets Spectrum to -10.
        Using the Wave Gun.
Shifts the user's Spectrum by -50.
Recruit only: recipient rejects friendship bracelet (d10).
Plague only: unsuccessful attempt at saving a player from death (d10).
Applies only when in the Good Route.
Spirit only: tracked player does not survive to the end of Roaming (d10).
Applies only when in the Neutral Route.

Spoiler: Just going to write a few comments here to have all my thoughts consolidated in one thing...

First, I would like to say this game had a ton of drafts that I created before settling on this story. My goal going into this when I first started development back in February was finding a way to work with win conditions and making them more smoothly defined character traits. My initial idea was having a set of draconic gods that you gained favor towards for specific actions in the game, however this seemed too complicated to tackle at the time, and therefore the idea was scrapped (I may, however, revisit it eventually...).

Thus, I landed on the idea of Kiba: a scientist performing over-the-top experiments and looking into this phenomena similar to the morphogenetic field called the Spectrum. From the Spectrum, I was able to keep my idea of "routes" within the game, and I figured out a way to make non-neutral wincons make sense. After the Spectrum idea blossomed came Fury and Blaze, and then everything fell together.

I am rather downcast that this game ended up like Beginnings in Disguise in a sort of personal mechanical way, however story wise I don't think I could have asked for a better ending. I believe this was due to the fact that there were no betrays during round 1, and no one opted to cause chaos. Not sure if this is my fault or not. I have no idea.

Before you say anything, yes, I should have had character bios prepped for everyone. Sorry I did not do that. That is perhaps my only gripe with the game.

        Other comments to note...

        • tfw cyantic pushes option 3 to "not be with xerxes again" and then pushes xerxes/schultz/chubby in the same puzzle group again
        • there are like four trans characters this game (villik, foster, "paisley?", kiba) and idk where they all came from but trans rights i guess
        • tfw2 when cyantic wanted to have vera be a kleptomaniac, me knowing the good route is a kleptomaniac, haha
        • sorry schultz for the astro lab puzzle but it's also hilarious that arvin set arvin up for failure
        • lof why did you care so much about your neutral role when the game was basically over
        • Dear Holy Renegade

        You may now post.

why did i care so much about neutral role?

because i wanted to win and i was 99% sure that chubby was going down bad route bc he's chubby

also because literally every interaction i had with Emilio involved him fighting in one way or another

Also Xerxes saying -51 at one point. That was scary to me.

        2) Wolfgang spoke like... twice, lmao
        3) I'm really surprised no one died or betrayed, and Chubby's character only caused minimal chaos! Hooray!
        4) motherfucking Kirby reference in Impostor Bad Route
        5) Also really glad no one entered a Bad Route
        6) Shit, I was supposed to answer Infinity to that first question?
        7) Really REALLY surprised Foster didn't seduce anyone

Scientist letters, these were drafted a month before the game began and therefore the final versions in-game may be different.

        Spoiler: Vision

Hello to my future self! I hope you are able to read this letter. I am writing with optimism that I have made it this far and that there are no consequences. I cannot help but be worried based on the writings that [Altered] and [Rigger] have finalized for the Ambidex Game...

To be honest, I'm not sure why I'm writing this letter. It was suggested we all do, to ground ourselves, I believe? In case we end up like Kiba, with a lost memory. On that note, I think it may be a good idea to write down what I was tasked with during the development of the Ambidex Game. Just in case!

[Blaze] instructed me, [Translucent], and [Shade] to make puzzles for the "Roaming" phase, and decision games after the first two puzzles. I have to say, I admire puzzle makers for their work after doing that! We developed a total of five puzzles, though [Shade] developed the puzzle in the Astrology Lab [him/herself], because [he/she] studies astrology in great depth. So, I guess I helped out with four puzzles.

I'm glad to finally be taking part in a Spectrum experiment. I became a scientist in order to study the Spectrum, and I hope using my ability of Vision allows me to tap into the force. I guess I'll be able to answer that at the end of this game...or right now!

Hope you're doing well, future me! I don't really know how to end this, so I guess I'll just say...make sure everyone is okay and escapes together! For Kiba!

        —[Vision]

        Staged

Hey. [Spirit] wanted us to write letters to our future selves in order to help jog the process of memory recovery. I guess it makes sense, though I'm not quite sure, given Kiba couldn't recover anything. Though I suppose time will tell.

In case you have forgotten, I chose the keyword Staged because I've always liked drama. Theater kid, baby! It's not entirely scientific, but I digress. It's the word I wanted, and we weren't given any restrictions.

Me and [Imposter] got assigned to make a puzzle together, and since we're both interested in Renegade's history, we made a sort of choose-your-own-adventure game using the teachings in the Renegade's Book of Creation. That was a lot of fun. Got to work with a text I really enjoy, and a person I tolerate. Just kidding, [he/she]'s pretty great.

I wonder how I can use this ability to the best of my...ability. How can I take advantage of it? Gotta get through the whole not-dying part first (why did they think adding death to the game was a smart idea?), though. Then I can figure out. And I will. I always do.

        [Staged]

        Translucent

        To [Translucent],

We were told to write a letter to our future selves. Well, here I am. I hope you've made it this far. If not, then, uh, this is going to be awkward to recover after the game is done.

I'm not sure if I'm proud for this experiment. I know [Blaze] wanted to desperately complete Kiba's work for them; we all knew [he/she] loved them. Their death made their work feel incomplete, and [he/she] wanted to fix that. But after seeing Kiba...react that way, after alteration, and considering the teachings of the Renegade, I don't think this is something we should have done. I'm not saying Kiba deserved to die, but...in the eyes of the holy Renegade, maybe...?

It was fun to work with [Vision] and [Shade] on puzzles and arranging the facility to fit the experiment. It really is a game, and I chose my key word to take advantage of the system. If you know everything, you have an advantage. Knowledge is power, as they say. So hopefully that mindset worked out for me. Guess time will tell.

That's it. This is the last thing I'll write before going under. I never asked [Blaze] about this, but, does [he/she] realize how...pitiful, this is? Maybe that's not the right word. Unfortunate? Unreasonable? If we all die...well, if any of us die, really...then our lives end like Kiba's. Will the survivors hold memorium experiments for everyone who dies, just to make things right?

I wish I could back out, but I can't. So I just have to try and win.

Good luck for the last bit. You're going to need it.

        [Translucent]

        Spirit

I am writing this letter as I believe it is a good idea to write something in the present, addressed to me in the future! I think this may come in handy in case I lose certain memories and can't remember how the whole experiment is set up. Kiba mentioned being stressed when they couldn't believe they wrote some of the things they did, so I believe having something addressed to me, from me, would help.

At this point the Ambidex Game has been finalized. We are set to alter our origins, as Kiba wrote it, tomorrow. I'm nervous, to say the least! But I'm also excited. [Recruit] and I decided to have our keywords work similarly, as we both are interested in the relationships between people and animal, and just in general. [He/She] is going about it in a more direct way, though. But that's fine, since I also love ghosts!

I hope things are going alright. Just remember that Com and Fury aren't malicious and everything is there for a reason! We created all the puzzles and set up the facility in a certain manner intentionally. Nothing is an accident. We can't give away too much during the game due to information filtering, but after the game you should go check out the book [Altered] and [Rigger] wrote about the Ambidex Game! Maybe it'll help?

        [Spirit]

        Blaze

So, [Spirit] wanted us to all write letters to ourselves if we made it to the dorms. This is the last thing I'm doing for the Ambidex experiment. I suppose I can consolidate everything on my mind, here. After all, it may be the last scientific text I ever write.

I am fortunate to have stepped up to lead this experiment. Certainly was a fuckton different from everything else I've done in my career so far, but these are the kinds of experiments Kiba did full time. They're admirable for that, always coming up with insane hypotheses and methods to research them. I'm surprised the king never revoked our funding because of them. Though it goes without question that Kiba is the most successful out of all of us. That makes their suicide even worse...

But truth be told, I can never recover from that. Kiba was is my best friend, and I wish I could have told them I loved them before they died. Maybe it could have saved them. But they were truly suffering, so I couldn't know if it would even make them better. Could have made them leagues worse, I don't know.

What is it you feel now? Do you feel content, or anger? How do the waves of the Spectrum look? How does it feel? If everything turned out right, then you know the most personal secret about every human alive. Does it feel empowering? Or is there a reason Kiba went off the deep end? Could Renegade have instrumented the decline to happen? The Spectrum is in place to control and filter humans, It certainly would not want humans to be able to manipulate anything.

Maybe tapping into the Spectrum is suicidal. But it's too late to back out now. Not when we're this far.

We're going to see this experiment to the end. All of us, and Fury. We're going to make it and be just fine.

This is for you, Kiba! I promise I will not let you down. Altered Origins will succeed!

        [Blaze]

        Recruit

[Spirit] wanted us all to write ourselves personal letters to discover at the end of the game. It seems a little out of place in my opinion, but [he/she] is my best friend, so, why not? I truly hope both of us are alive at this point to read our letters. I wonder what [he/she] wrote?

I guess I'll write about my career. I study biology, specifically zoology; the science of animals has always fascinated me. Seems a little cliche, haha. Still, I'm proud of it. I helped artificially create Fury, though [Blaze] trained her completely to be apart of this experiment, so she's more attached to [him/her] than she is to me. That's alright, since I've got a ton of other animals I've created and bonded to. Some alone, some not alone...but the Glowmice are my favorite little critters, and I'm fortunate to have been a part of their project.

[Spirit] and I chose similar key words to see how those play out. [He/She] is opting to work with relationships in a backseat sort of way, while mine is more up front. Honestly, I hope you (or I?) bonded to [him/her] at this point, or [he/she] bonded to me. Guess we'll find out, huh?

So that's it. Sorry if this isn't very helpful! Hope everything works out!

        [Recruit]

        Altered

We were tasked to write a letter to our future selves, to be discovered in the game. Truth be told, I'm unsure what is appropriate to write here,
and I am not to inquire others of the contents of their letters. But, based on Kiba's reaction post-experiment, it may be beneficial to clear up some things about the Ambidex Game.

[Rigger] and I were assigned to develop the structure of this experiment. We came up with a core concept being puzzles so the others could get to work. With the Spectrum in mind, our goal was to find a system that worked with pulling people in both directions. We settled on a game of trust and betrayal; these two terms exist on opposite sides, so the potential for Spectrum shifts is quite probable. It took a while to develop a system that worked, though through a series of essays we gathered our thoughts and were able to present something comprehensible. In this time we even published a book on the concept of the Ambidex Game, so if you do forget it, please reread it.

Do your best to succeed. Stick to a path of righteousness. It's what both of us want.

        [Altered]

        Rigger

        Dear [Rigger],

Hello. This is your past self writing to you, the future (and now present) self. Tomorrow we begin the Altered Origins experiment. We will "alter our origins", as Kiba put it, and then play in the Ambidex Game that you and [Altered] developed together. The Ambidex Game was designed to work with the Spectrum in a life-or-death sort of way. I sincerely hope that the game is successful. It is designed to work with "trust" and "betrayal", which are opposites, so to speak. Just like life and death.

We all first-hand saw how the alteration of the mind affected poor Kiba, and so I wish to be frank about a few things, between us. You are a scientist that studies the Spectrum, as well as psychology. The development of the Ambidex Game is your greatest accomplishment this far, as it uses all you have learned through your studies and experiments. [Altered] helped, of course. Though they were not primarily focused on psychology until Kiba's death.

You may be wondering about your abilities. That is a simple explanation. Manipulation is an attractive word, and is the basis on much of what you sought to investigate in your studies. It is natural you would want an ability based on manipulation, fitting really.

If you are reading this letter then take cover and survive for the rest of the game. As you developed this game you should be at an advantage, knowing how to play the system, should you remember it. And remember that the others are not your foes, but friends. But if any of them have fallen to a negative Spectrum, it is imperative to take them out.

        [Rigger]

Hello! [Spirit] wished for us to write messages to ourselves to find in the game. [He/She] never told us what to write, just something to familiarize ourselves with our past selves? So, I hope you (I?) am doing well!

Please be aware of the chemicals in The Fridge. They're unlabeled for a reason...there's some pretty nasty stuff in there, so it's important that the uses aren't out in the open. Or, if you did share that information with the others, I hope it hasn't come back to haunt you!

Let's see...oh, did that puzzle about time work out? You mad that with [Shifter], in case you were wondering! Hopefully the alteration didn't make you forget the answers, or how to complete the steps.

I'll end this here. The experiment and game begin tomorrow! I'm both nervous and excited. I hope I've made it far enough to be reading this. That would be amazing.

        Good luck!

        [Plague]

        Imposter

        To [Imposter]—

I almost want to write a secret code for this, haha. I'm sitting here trying to decide what to write but nothing is coming to mind. Writing out a letter is one thing, but writing to yourself? I dunno, it seems really strange. But I guess you might not remember how you used to make scavenger hunts with different codes and straight up make your own languages as a kid.

I guess...I can explain the experiment, yeah? Basically, we all chose "key words" to alter ourselves to have abilities for. As Imposter, you are an expert at, well, being an imposter. At least, I hope the alteration went well, and you're able to perfectly mimic others, one way or another. Anyway, we're playing this giant game as an ease back into the atmosphere of the Spectrum, to avoid ending up like Kiba. Do you remember them? They were great, easily the best scientist out of all of us and I really hate to say that, but it's true. They killed themselves after suffering for a while after altering their own make-up. Sure hope the same doesn't happen to you.

So yeah, uh. I don't want to end this on that gruesome note, so...hope everything's okay! The others and Fury aren't your enemies, by the way. Everyone's just trying to get adjusted after alteration and Fury is here to help make sure that happens.

Good luck! Hope you're reading this!

        [Imposter]

        Shifter

'Sup. [Spirit] told us we should all write letters to ourselves to find at the end of the game. Something about easing the overwhelming information recovery process or whatever it was that made Kiba fall off the deep end. I'm not too worried about that, to be honest, though [he/she] insisted so here I am.

I suppose I'll remind myself of all my recent accomplishments dealing with technology. I was in the process of making a prototype for the Laser Gun when [Blaze] approached me and asked me to make a few more prototypes to use in the game in order to spark conflict. Made no sense to me, but [Rigger] said conflict was necessary in order for us to observe how the Spectrum affects us in both ways. In more simple terms, this means that if getting a "negative Spectrum" is too easy, then genetic alteration is something that shouldn't be pursued. It's important to study both ends. I never cared much into investigating the Spectrum, so that all sounds like gibberish to me, but I trust the others.

Anyway, the chance to develop more tech for the game was awesome. I dusted off the sketches for the Houndbots and even made three more guns. And I made my key word have to do with weapons. I'm stoked to see if it worked, having shapeshifting weapon limbs sounds dope.

So yeah, I hope the limbs are working for you. And if not, then, just get better. Or get your hands on all the guns. Have fun with this, but don't die.

        [Shifter]

        Shade

I am writing to myself with cordiality. I am a scientist through and through, and have contributed much to the advancement of knowledge on several fields including numerous essays and books. I wish for my name and findings to be remembered. Thus, should this be my final text, then I wish for it to relate to my work.

Primarily, I am an astrologist. I study the stars and planets in the universe. My founding hypothesis is, simply put, "What is beyond our sky?" Renegade created the distant stars and planets upon creation of our universe, our world, and It does not act without a purpose. The formation of the stars creating constellations, and the make-up of planets differing from the one we as a race inhabit...their truths are what I wish to uncover.

My work is all physical observation and the analysis of ancient texts. Space travel as a concept has been proven possible, however the Renegade forbids such exploration. I am a devout follower to the Renegade, and the limitation has me puzzled. Perhaps, after this experiment is said and done, space travel is something to look into. Perhaps the Renegade is challenging humans, so It may observe the rebellious nature rooted deep inside us all.

However, this personal letter is not about the Renegade. It is about my work. So I will end this by writing that I do no regret any of my actions. I have learned a great deal about astrology as a whole, and I believe I have spent my life well. Participation in this experiment of memorium may cost me my life, however it will be a great contribution to human psychology. Perishing while performing my duties as a scientist is an appropriate way to go.

Should I be alive and reading this letter, I would suppose that it will never be published; perhaps not until my death in the future. I ask, should I not survive to the end of this experiment, that this letter, as well as all of my unfinished astrological works, be published under my name.

        Dear Holy Renegade.

        Okay time for PM stuff
        Spoiler:
Uuuuuugh... where am I? This isn't the first time I've woken up like this... did I get hit on the head? Well, let's go through the regular check to make sure I remember everything. Name, age, profession... stuff like that.

My name is Villik Carler. I'm a 27 year old geologist. I'm nonbinary, and use he/him or they/them, although I present as masculine, so most use he and him for me.

I have ginger hair and orange eyes. My hair is long, thick, and curly, and covers my left eye. Um, that's left as in MY left. Someone facing me would say the hair covers the right, but I... anyways. Sorry, I got off track. (Why am I apologizing to myself? This is my own internal monologue.)
I have a variety of clothes, but I like to dress plainly. Right now, I'm wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and brown work boots. I also wear a frog necklace given to me by a friend for my 25th birthday- it's a plains leopard frog, apparently.

I've had bad experiences in the past, like being orphaned or having been kidnapped at a young age, so I've grown up to be rather anxious and apologetic as a result. When bad things start to happen, I tend to try to flee or talk it out rather than fight. I don't like or try to even be involved in big, chaotic situations. I don't get truly angry very easily, but when I do, I go cold, if that makes sense. I don't like to get angry, though- if I could just live in peace, maybe one day settle down in a cabin in the mountains, that would make me happier than anything else. That doesn't mean I'll take people's verbal or physical abuse, though. I'm not a total pushover. I have more respect for myself than that.

I think that's everything... is it? I just realized, if I really have lost some of my memories, I might not be able to remember what I forgot. That's an issue. I should really come up with a more concrete plan for situations like this; they come up worryingly often, and I don't know why. I really do have bad luck, huh...?

Villik's voice sounds almost... choked up. They pause for a few seconds before continuing.
I've only just recently started to really get my life together. I spent most of my teen years in an aimless state, prone to shutting down at the slightest inconvenience. A lot more of a pushover than I am now, because I believed that I had no control over my life, so I let other people control me. I still kind of am passive now. The only reason I was able to pull myself together enough to start my geology career is because Fieras... because she pushed me into doing things for myself. Because, as she said, "I can't stand seeing you not proving yourself to be you. I like you, and you should like yourself, too..."
Now Villik's voice is choked up, as though they were on the verge of tears.
That... doesn't make me a criminal. I don't want to believe this. I don't want to believe that I'm destined to be bad, or that my life might have been made up by some mad scientist, or that...
Ted can hear Villik slump against the wall, probably sitting down as well.

Their's no point worrying about "could bes" or "what ifs." Their is only what is and what isn't and your clearly a good person Villik.

You pull a coat off the rack and begin to walk towards the door. Suddenly your legs buckle and you collapse. Your vision goes black as you feel your body numbing, and then you open your eyes.

You see a grey figure with white hair. It's the same figure from your last vision! You can see them more clearly now. They're in a white lab coat and have white hair. Their eyes are electric blue.

There's someone else with them. This figure turns around, and you see their face. One red eye, one blue eye. They're also in a lab coat. Both figures are walking together and laughing.

Your vision blacks again, and this time when you open your eyes, you're in the Storage, on the floor. You feel weak.

Foster comes back to himself, turning to stare at Villik.

        Sorry I can't give ya a better answer...pretty weird.

Nellyfox wrote:Why are you crying, Foster?

Okay. So, the transparent box has a silver bead, which is a kind of currency. So it's money. The opaque box could have money that's ten times as much as the silver bead, or nothing inside at all. The god rules that you can either pick just the opaque box or both the boxes. It says it's already figured out which choice Odalric is going to make. Well, it doesn't say which prediction it's made, and it doesn't say what happens if a prediction is wrong.

So... I'd pick both, so that I could get at least SOMETHING out of the deal. After all, the silver is still valuable. It still means something. I could make a metaphor here, but there's no point, since I'm... just talking to myself. Alone. In this simulation.

Hawkwing425 wrote:...Uuuuuuuuugh. I don't like these answers. I don't like this. I don't like any of this. Listen, whoever's running this- I'm not part of your faith. Not part of your religion. I'm only cooperating because, like Ted said, it's comply or die, since we won't be provided with necessities unless the experiment happens. I'm sick of the gods, and the cults, and the... whatever.

...Look. I don't HAVE faith in a god. Where was this god when my mom died of illness? Where was it when I walked in on my dad's body in a state so horrible I've completely blocked it out of my memory? Where was it when I was constantly bouncing between homes? When I was kidnapped by a cult who effectively tortured me for a week because of some deluded belief that I was their savior? When I was in such deep despair that my mental state fragmented and I would shut down at the slightest inconvenience? When my best foster family, who I thought I'd finally be able to live with and be supported by until I could get onto my feet, suffered a string of bad luck, fell into financial hardship, and had to give me up? When...
Villik is trembling. Furious, but not yelling.
When I considered killing myself, because I didn't think Fieras, my only friend at the time, deserved a broken person like me?

Your god is a lie. There's no almighty benevolent force watching over us. The world would be a much better place if there was. No, the state of the world depends on the real, sentient beings in it. Humans. Humans who can be kind to each other, even if they can also be cruel. It was Fieras who saved me from myself and my own cursed luck, not a god. She's someone I'd give my life for, because... because she liked me enough, even when I couldn't give her anything, to support me tirelessly since we first met. And I've done everything to help her in return, even if it's still not enough. It's never enough to thank her for her hard work. What god has proven itself that helpful to me?

I'm not playing your game. I'm not believing in your religion. I have more respect for myself than that. Do you know how hard it's been to stay as calm as I have been this whole time? And I'm saying that after having broken down into tears twice during this whole ordeal! Shortly before this, I was laughing like I'd gone crazy, and I've felt like I've been losing it from stress since I first found that document with my name on it! It's hard to not go past that point because SOMEONE, whoever's running this, decided to hit me exactly where it hurts! Why? Just to convince me to love a god I don't believe in? You couldn't have tried any other method? What is your purpose...?

Nellyfox wrote:Remember your faith. It is what Fieras would want for you.

I'm not exactly certain how SV felt about Kiba... I'll see if I can focus on it.

Cyantic wrote:I suppose I can't provide any more details now, but it seemed that Verochka was angry at Kiba stealing 'Foster' away. I guess they're not like that, now. But it's so easy to see it, you know? Verochka... I get, in shades. The scientist didn't care. And Arvin's doesn't seem like it either. But Foster and you? Ariadne... I can see that fanaticism boiling over into something evil. Something as evil as this. That makes sense to me.

And Ted's always had a dangerous edge, but... this doesn't feel right for him either. How much of you guys are still scientist?

Hawkwing425 wrote:The only time SV mentioned the Renegade... I think that was them, but I can’t be sure the voice in the void was them at first. I think that first line was just part of the simulation. Programmed. And then SV started talking.

Verochka, Arvin, I can understand them as scientists. Foster could have just been blindly and madly in love. Ariadne... I think she latched on to this as a coping mechanism for her rough past.
I don’t understand SV. There’s such a change between SV and SAV. What could have happened?

        Fieras...?

Cyantic wrote:Yeah. What could have happened? Verochka changed - the two are hardly similar. They have a few similar attitudes... but that's where the line ends. If the scientist cared so much for one person, that would be so alien to the worker. You know?

I guess I should figure out what the hell I am. I think. I mean, there's parts I don't mind. Female seems good enough to me. And Verochka's... tastes... seem fine to me as well. I think I still like music, but I can't really test that out. I don't have a name and I'm not interested in putting on Verochka's mask and keep going. I don't think that would be me - it would just flounder. It'd be easier, though...

I guess... finding a name for yourself is a good first step into forging your own identity. Instead of feeling like you have to be one of the Verochkas... you can be someone you want to be. Of course, then you have to figure THAT out. And...

Before the letter, I was mimicking SAV, in a way. I hadn’t adjusted to being someone different, and everything felt so... soft around the edges. Unclear and dizzy. So, while I acknowledged that something had changed, I wasn’t really doing anything useful because everything felt so alien. If it didn’t, I would have done a better job protecting Fury... but I felt sluggish, in a way. You know when you’re half asleep and it takes a moment for your limbs to work as you try to wake up? That’s what it felt like.

When I read the letter and fully accepted that Scientist Villik both existed and was with the other Villiks, the world seemed to sharpen. It hurt, but I felt like I could think clearly for the first time. I’m not any of the other Villiks. I’m me. The aftermath of what happened in that void, but still important as a person. So... now I’m starting to piece together who I am, the base of my identity, and I should start pinpointing my opinions. Where I stand on everything. What I’m going to do. I keep saying I want to find Fieras, but what then? After that, I don’t know.

Cyantic wrote:I don't think anyone's to blame for Fury, other than Fury. What Fury did was... not exactly in the best interests of an innocent being. Or that it would unconditionally love her. That seems... understandable, but it's so hard to think of what you are. What you should be.

I don't know. In some ways, I feel like I'm being railroaded into one thing... in a way I'm not sure I can explain. Like I can't just be myself - I have to juggle something, keep talking about Verochka... almost. I don't even know if I have a name anywhere. If that makes sense.

I've thought about something simple, or minor. V? I? Maybe get away from all that. T? The number on my bracelet? Ten? The colour? Cyan? I don't know, honestly. The opposite of violet? Amber? Apri? Meri? I don't know. They're not names, but neither is Verochka or Vera anymore.

He's allied in both Ambidex Games alongside everyone else, but he also was willing to kill you when you were unlikely to kill him, and he doesn't seem to have a goal beyond survival. The man's a mystery... most of us are.

You don't need to be the opposite of the Verochkas. You could be, but you don't have to be. Is your intuition saying anything about it? All of us Villiks... I think most of the Villiks were very intuitive, at least. So... maybe if you have an internal guiding force, since both the Verochkas are gone... I don't know where I'm going with this. With so many options for a name, I'd understand indecisiveness. I guess, take your time? Do what you think is right? Or something like that. I don't have the best answer here.

Oh. Um. I mean, he's a mystery, I suppose. But we know more about him than Bokke, for example. I don't know. I have no strong feelings for the man.

As for the opposite... I don't know, it might help to contrast, a bit. Not really... opposite, I guess. A complimentary, a pairing, I'm not Vera. But I have a bit of her blood, still. Orange is the complimentary colour of violet. Apri... Apri...

I don't have intuition. In some ways, it feels... so silent. It's just me, no bickering, no anything, just keeping tabs on this 'Spectrum' now. That's the only thing now. Before... I wasn't even there, I think, but I could like hear the fighting, the feuding. It wasn't so bad to begin with, but they started to get worse and worse as things continued. Scientist was mad at Foster, I think, so the Worker tried to keep that coherent, even if it wasn't. And then the Scientist wanted to save Fury, so it fell on the Worker to do it... until she got fed up. She ignored, she kept building to something, and it happened, like she was trying to forcibly purge the Scientist.

And then the third puzzle happened and it all fell apart. It's now very quiet in comparison to that. Just numbers. I don't know if there's something that's supposed to be there and I'm broken.. or...

Hawkwing425 wrote:Bokke's on a whole 'nother planet compared to us, sometimes. Who knows what's going on in his head?
I thought yellow was the complimentary to violet. I mean, orange and violet go nicely together, too.

Heh... your head being so quiet. I envy it. It's loud in here. No yelling or anything, but just a series of quiet murmurs, all happening at once. And- and that's not to say I'm hearing voices! Just... thoughts. Lots of thoughts. Speculating, mostly. Wondering what's going on. Trying to decipher everything. Though... that makes sense, that I'd be... um, compared to how SAV was, I'm definitely not nearly as mentally stable, I don't think. I don't think most people view their past selves as sentient and constantly watching them. The idea feels more than a little delusional, but I can't explain it or perceive it any better.

Hm, I might actually start calling SAV Geologist Villik. GV. To distinguish some more from Scientist Villik, SV. So that makes KV, TV, RAV- may as well just say RV-, GV, and SV. Does any of this make sense? It all feels a little crazy, but if there's some labels attached to everything, it might connect together a little more. I hope. I'll let myself be driven by my desire to understand it all for now. Try to figure it all out.

Cyantic wrote:Somewhat - I've heard it as purple goes with yellow, violet with orange... or well, an orange-yellow.

I'm sorry. That doesn't sound like any fun. I guess silence can be a virtue... it's just odd. Going from the non-stop arguing, bickering, fighting to... nothing. I wonder if that's happening to anyone else, actually. Maybe I'm fortunate in that there's no past for me - nothing clinging onto me anymore. It hardly breeds mental stability, after all. But I am sorry. I hope talking at least helps a bit.

It makes sense to me. I understand. I'm not nearly as fractured as you are - but I have to keep defining by worker and scientist which is... clumsy. Finding better terminology in your case seems like the most important step. Helping communicate.

As for understanding... I just wish there was more to understand. There doesn't feel like there's anything here. A faked suicide, a gun that nearly gets me killed for no reason, a lounge that has a vaguely bad feel to it... It doesn't add up to anything. I was hoping there'd be something, but there's really just nothing. It doesn't add new questions, it doesn't answer old ones, it just... is. You know? If there was something we were meant to take away from this, I can't think of it.

Hawkwing425 wrote:It's not fun, but it's not too unpleasant. More confusing than anything, since... I think all of the Villiks... they don't exactly interact with each other, but I don't feel like any of them hate each other? They don't argue; they just exist, and are satisfied with how far they got. Maybe each one has regrets, but they don't care to try and steal control from me now. KV wishes that they could have trusted certain things less, TV wishes they weren't so much of an aimless pushover, RV wishes they'd taken more time to properly thank Fieras for her help, GV wishes that they made so many different choices during this experiment, and SV... well. You know.

I think I get it. We just don't have enough information as it is to figure out WHY. That's the big question, isn't it? Why all of this happened, why certain parts of it happened the way they did... and maybe Vera was right when she said it all might've just been the product of insanity. Was that Vera who said it? I think it was...

Cyantic wrote:I see. That sounds positive, at least. They're all working together a bit. That's... a bit of an alien feeling to me.

I think so. The worker said a lot of things, deconstructed it a bit. She attacked the experiment in the third puzzle - that's what caused the illusion to 'break', although I think both knew all along, and were just... playing along.

She talked about the fact that the most basic conceit of the idea was false - you had so many people with terrible backgrounds who weren't evil. There was no one who actually was, except perhaps the scientist. And even she wasn't able to do any damage. It's not a ringing endorsement for the spectrum.

Then she talked about the fact that this was impossible to die in - the coincidences, the miracles, the missing laser gun chip, the voting... it makes sense, in a way. It's an illusion. But people still died.

Vera concluded that Com was the imposter - the one who could copy abilities, use them to manipulate the right chess pieces to ensure this. And I guess Com failed.

At the end of that, maybe she was right. It was built in an insane, incoherent manner, cobbled together from nothing. There's no 'why' because the concept of 'why' only makes sense for people who are sane. There's some Renegade mythos, this idea that you can 'fix' someone's Spectrum forcibly, but there's nothing else there. There's no unifying thread or understanding. Why fake a suicide? Why do any of this? There's not any science. It's a religious monument but... the religion isn't even clear. Even if it was, walking away with less faith than you started with... is that the goal? I have no idea.

There's no answers. And it's starting to feel like there never will be. People died for unclear reasons, people were scared from unclear reasons, and we'll leave without knowing anything. It's... depressing when you lay it out like that, but... that's what it is. I don't think there's any answers here. I guess we could ask Com some things. Might not tell us, but... that's it for investigation.

Hawkwing425 wrote:That makes it a waiting game. We wait until the Ambidex game, hope that everyone chooses to ally again, and then hopefully, everyone leaves without trouble.
I... I really don't know if everyone's going to ally after all of this. I mean, you and I are completely different people now, and that's a change that happened BEFORE we found our letters. Look how badly Foster took his. It- I'm not going to try to cling on to the idea that everyone can trust each other. That was GV's deal.
Trying to enforce cooperation... I would like everyone to make it out, yes, but I'd rather recognize that some of us are going to have bad blood with each other. It's better to realize the truth of it instead of trying to impose one's reality onto a bunch of people who just really don't want to be here... in my opinion. Then again, GV was losing it pretty hard during this whole experiment; otherwise, I wouldn't even exist. It makes sense that they'd want to cling to the things that matter to them while under stress.

Cyantic wrote:I don't know. I'm not entirely sure you can vote betray... I might be wrong, however. I don't want to find out. And if I don't know... I don't really want to think about it.

I'd like to see everyone escape, I suppose. I don't know if that can happen. We've come this far and we might go no farther.

Hawkwing425 wrote:There isn't a logical reason to betray. An ally or a betray will get you enough points- to betray simply means to hinder someone else. And to make everyone else mad at you. Someone who betrays must really hate the other side. I hope everyone else recognizes this, but they may not.

If I recall correctly, the pairings are you and Paisley with Foster and Bokke, Emilio and Plate with Ariadne and myself, and Wolfgang and Jana with Arvin and Ted. I'm a little worried about Foster and Emilio, but everyone else seems like they'll ally. I'll talk personally with Emilio, since I want to clear up some things with him, anyways.

I'm sorry for him, in a way. But I don't know if I can help him.

Hawkwing425 wrote:I think Foster's been hurting since the very beginning. This is just stress layered upon stress, isn't it? Like how it was with GV. At least GV broke in a... less destructive way. I think. Foster's the type to lash out at people, to shove them away because he doesn't want to seem weak. Any slight disagreement with him, any hint of disdain for him, and he reacts with harshness and hostility, even if it's not always expressed as yelling and bitterness. Unfortunately, because he tries to shove everyone away, except maybe Ariadne, he's not getting the emotional support he needs. That's how I see it, anyways.

It might be better if we handle our own issues before his. That sounds selfish, but... it's going to be a lot of hard work to try and reach out to Foster with how much he resists it, and the two of us need to channel our energy into addressing the lingering issues we have that may sap our abilities to help anyone at all. I mean, look at us. We just went through... a lot. We may as well take the time to rest and get our heads in order before the last Ambidex Game... unless you have anything else in mind.

        Cyantic wrote:It's... well.

It's strange. The more I talk to you, the more bits I remember of the conversation. I think I can remember the entire argument, the specific part that caused the splintering. It's... certainly... a little upsetting to think about. I knew what it was about, but now I remember the details. Slowly and slowly, and now I think I just realised I know every bit.

        I don't like it.

Hawkwing425 wrote:Villik puts a hand on their companion's shoulder. It's odd to say "companion", but... this isn't Verochka, or Vera, or Violet, anymore. So I'll just go with that.

Maybe it's because of how much you're thinking and talking about the two Verochkas. That's partly what this whole conversation's been about. Our individual mental states. You're still reeling from the deaths of the Verochkas, and I'm still reeling from having been split into six. Or... well, having my memories split into six...?

Now Villik looks uncertain. Unease is a good word for this whole situation.

I don't really understand. To not be the other Villiks, but to still have access to their emotions and memories... to feel like they're sentient, while also being aware that they're only a creation of my mind... to consider myself delusional, but to not be able to see my mind in any other way. I'm different from them, but they're also... they're not exactly other personalities- there's traits that we all share. I believe I'm my own self, I think... but there's always going to be uncertainty. It's exhausting to be a skeptic, but sometimes, one can't help who they are.

Either way, professional therapy would be great for both of us.

Cyantic wrote:Yeah... I don't know. I feel too odd to be standard for any therapy, too edge case to be taken seriously, a little bit. She painfully smiles at Villik.

Stressful, in a word. I don't know why it came back. Maybe if I just ignore it... I'll forget again. I don't think you're delusional, this place is... too odd, too surreal, too insane to make anyone delusional from it. It's funny, thinking back.

"I love you. I hate you. Can you destroy me? Can I destroy you?"

Tried to reconcile before that. Asking who the scientist wanted to sleep with, like that was the beginning and end of problems. It was the first, I guess.

Hawkwing425 wrote:Hm... maybe I'm just too busy comparing myself to a reality, outside of this place, that I don't even remember as myself. I have enough memories from the other Villiks to hopefully integrate in once I get out... if I get out. Can't be certain yet. Can't be certain of anything here.

Villik's gaze drops to the floor.

It's really a mess. I don't know if we're better or worse for it. I'd say... worse for me, better for you. Or... well, worse for Villik as a whole. And both cases are really just bittersweet, huh? Because we're both aware of what's going on, at least. I'm not exactly a danger to myself or anyone else. And you're not having the arguing tear you apart anymore because the Verochkas are gone. But, at the same time, look at us. Exhausted, traumatized, sick of all of this...

        Does that make sense?

Cyantic wrote:We've got to keep our little click clicking at 130 B.P.M., it's not too slow...

        Let's all melt down together.

Verochka had that song on tape. Listened to it a lot. It's okay, I think. If we're going to be a disaster, we can at least do it together. We're part of this... and the trauma always will be, but I don't think we have to be. I hope not. It's a shame nothing in this place ever went well. For all the trust and faith we were supposed to have... we sure have ended up with none of it.

I don't know how odd that is - we never had anything to trust or believe in. And we got this far in spite of it. Something to be said about being human. You can sure end up in a situation in which you don't trust anyone, won't ever see anyone again, and keep working together anyway. If this was meant to model something, then I hope it was not anything important.

As long as nothing goes wrong... well. I don't know where I'm going, but I'll stay by you if you want me too. Just have to keep going, right? Got to keep going with these splinters, this exhaustion, and maybe the sun'll come up tomorrow? If it doesn't... then I've got enough bitter resolve and spite from Vera to keep going anyway. Too much, perhaps. But that's a part I liked, that unconquerable spirit. And it's now mine.

        Hawkwing425 wrote:...together... I could work with that.
