its a play on the children of thanos, a group from the hit superhero movie from 2018 called avengers infinity war, in which a titan named thanos aims to acquire the infinity stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe, much like half the accounts on the site got wiped out, its funny because both events are similar and thanos and thantos are only a single letter apart from being the same and thus it evokes a feeling of hey i know that reference in the viewer, which is peak comedic effect because it subverts your expectations whilst also fitting two categories people know, if the thread was called children of thanatos the reference to the character of thanos and the events of infinity war would be lost and the joke would lose its impact and people would be questioning why the thread regarding a random purge of forum users was named for the greek diefication of death who has no link the the events outside of the concept of death which could easily be taken by any death personification and wouldnt have as much of a comedic impact on the readers.
