How is this useful if we don't know the role list?

A role list exist - you just don't know what it is. It adds an extra challenge.

Actually even in closed games Ryan would run the list through at least 1 reviewer as the mods would still know it, so by noting what changed anyone who is reviewing his game would know what he changed and that's all that really matters.

Vigilante - a suicidal role
Prankster - Purely bastard with messing with moderator messages
Janitor - Death Miller.
Jester - Play bad and win.
Vampire - cult.
Amnesiac - Directly messes with game balance.
Double - Directly messes with game balance.
Phantom/Shade - You can make the argument that having to kill yourself is bastard, but it does require a bit more strategy and helping your faction win than Jester does.
