Tips to avoid laptop overheating/overworking when playing?

Ever since the massive game interface update a year ago, playing ToS has sent my laptop (2017 Macbook Air) into overdrive causing the fan to run full speed, laptop to overheat, and overall leave the entire laptop running slow. It's only when actually in a game. When I'm on the menu or in queue it it calms down a bit.

Does anyone have any tips on how to mitigate this? I run on Chrome but I've tried different browsers with no success. It's nearly unplayable sometimes.

Generally, when gaming on a laptop, it's generally a good idea to have them on a cooling pad, on your desk. Also making sure your vents and holes are dust free helps. Furthermore, it is generally advised to end tasks with high resource use.
