What is the most ludicrous assumption and/or stereotype you've heard about your...not sure how to word it...your part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, as it were, as in sexuality, or gender identity, etc etc, I'm sure you understand what I mean

I don't remember where or who I heard this from, but I swear at one point I heard someone make a generalization about bisexuals being polygamists.

What? Bisexuals CAN be polygamists, but I seriously doubt that's how some people discover their orientation. Yikes. <_<

On a completely off-topic note, I think I'm more on the fence about polygamy. I mean, if a group of people love and support each other, and everyone consents to certain terms about how the relationship would work, I can't say I see too much wrong with people going off to do that.

I would just know that'd never be my thing.

How did people react/what did they say once you figured out your orientation? Assuming you were open about it to everyone.

I know I'd probably get some odd looks and more from my family if one day I said I'm not straight/don't want any kids/don't want a relationship.

i forgot to ever mention anything about my sexuality/gender to most of my friends so man. it was awkward because i didnt realise that until after saying i would totally bang these two fictional characters both at once on a throne

Each time I talk to you, your thoughts seem more and more open, and more and more curious. Wouldn't mind chatting with you sometime.

How did people react/what did they say once you figured out your orientation? Assuming you were open about it to everyone.

LOL. God no. I wasn't open about it at first. I noticed that I really wasn't all that interested in sexual stuff growing up, but I never actually suspected anything until I was about 16 or so, after my first relationship. I realized I just did not have feelings for women, not even the ones close to me, and I went through a couple people crushing on me, one where I actually tried dating one of them. That did not go well. I felt really bad about it.

When I discovered I had feelings for my best friend... let's say that was Christmas 2012. They only grew stronger and more unbearable, I really tried to fight them away. But it still took me something like 3 months before I finally got the courage to tell a random friend. I'd spend hours talking to that friend each day, then she got me talking to another circle of people who knew me and didn't mind me talking about it.

That got me talking toward a couple who were really into Psychology... next I told another group of unrelated close friends.... finally I told my best friend.... then I started being a lot more open about it to generally people who I didn't know all that well in my university. I was rather open around there, but more closed off to say, inner family. It took me meeting my boyfriend, about 7 or so months ago, before I finally came out to them.

No one's really had THAT much a shocking reaction. If anything, people have been massively supportive, more so than not. With a few testy exceptions during some bad days, but I really can't complain too too much. Some people have it a lot worse. It's a huge step to tell someone you're close to. I do feel you should trust your intuition. If you feel the person can handle the subject well enough to get along with not-heterosexuals, you can tell them. They normally ask "Why didn't you say anything sooner?". And they have a point. If you knew they could handle learning that... why not?

Have you considered relying less on labels? They tend not to be all that useful when you don't find them hitting you accurately.

Maybe try describing what it is you look for in people? What it is about a person you would find attractive?

Deleter, you know, it's totally okay as well to just say you're questioning, and leave it at that. People normally ask for specifics anyway, what you're feelings are and things like that. You don't need to find an exact definition- I usually felt most labelss never really resonated with me for a long time myself.

My parents took it well, although they misunderstood a little at first. It's still very awkward to talk to them about it, but it's not really necessary to do so anymore. I'm pretty content with the way things are right now.

I actually never really officially came out, it's something I'm surprisingly open about. But that was about being ace, which kinda sucks since idk how to even prove I like girls. To my family at least. :[

Eh. I think it basically boiled down to I knew well in advance that the people in my life would be fine with it... and then just not caring anymore if things got awkward for anyone. And by anyone, I basically mean me

That's the thing, you could know people wouldn't react in an awful way, and still have your own internal discomforts about doing it.

It's basically how coming out works, there is NEVER a good time for it, and it'll always be awkward. You have to cross an "I don't care" line.
