First , as I understand, it only affects organs.
I afraid If at point there is a set of organs Who cannot work together, that can cause death.
If that metal organs cannot use blood, it will also cause death.
Even I am unsure How much the person that don't die and transformed into a metal person is "alive" , Because If that metal organs are controlled by virus, and not the actual person, I think they wouldn't be different than a dead.
Moreover, that psychologic effects won't be easy. I think You are underestimating them, given that none of us here have good psychologic states. You are thinking Maybe it can't be worse, but our situation is not even bad. At least We can still see dying is bad, staying alive is good.
