Guardian Angel rework

Postby Kikigiri » Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:42 pm

The Guardian Angel has several major problems.

1. It's way too easy to prove you're a Guardian Angel. Just use your ability, then say "that was me" the next day; unless someone counter-claims you, you're now confirmed and most people will ignore you. (And in practice, nobody will counter-claim you, since it's a good way to get shot by a vigilante or executed by the jailor - they'll happily kill both of you on account of you both being clearly non-Town.) Even people who want to kill your target tend to ignore you, since you now only have one more protect left and are unlikely to use it on the specific night they attack - it's faster to just try and kill your target directly, which will usually work and save you a night. Even if you guard them, they haven't lost much, since killing you definitely wastes a night. This strategy is bad for the game - it amounts to putting your own well-being over your target's, and it immediately removes someone from the list of possible evils.

To fix this, there shouldn't be any message when a Guardian Angel protects someone. The target should just produce an immunity message if attacked (also good for the game, by providing a way for good people to sometimes show up as immune.) If someone who was protected by a GA the night before would be lynched, the game should only inform everyone after a guilty vote (at which point that person isn't killed, going back as if inno'ed.) That makes it hard to test GA claims. Evils might use it as late-game claimspace, although it's risky; but it at least discourages GAs from claiming openly early in the game.

2. GAs don't have enough incentive to protect their target. Especially if you've previously claimed GA, becoming a survivor isn't that bad - especially late in the game, it can lead to easy wins. This, in turn, makes GA gameplay fairly boring because you have little to do.

To fix this, GAs only become a survivor if their target dies before the third day. After that, they suicide. (This would somewhat discourage GAs from spending protection early, but that's not a huge problem.) They get a message informing them that they will now suicide if their target dies.

Please put the Witch in Coven mode. I miss it. :-(

I like your first suggestion for sure.

Your second suggestion doesn't feel like the best way to solve this problem, but it would at least be an improvement.
