New Role: The Gambler

Postby ThotDesolator » Wed Aug 15, 2018 2:01 pm

Name: The Gambler

This role is unique.

Summary: A drunken exiled townsmember who tests his luck at night.

Alignment: Neutral (benign)

Attack: None
Defense: None

Attributes:
You will select two other players at night to gamble with. The game will be either poker or blackjack.

The players you gamble with will not be roleblocked (I might change this later)

Whoever wins the gamble will be awarded with a bulletproof vest and cannot be gambled against anymore.

Goal: Win 2 games at night.

You win with: Anyone, as long as you get your wins. You don't have to survive.

Investigative results: Your target is either an escort, gambler, consort, or amnesiac.

Sheriff results: Your target is not suspicious.

Consig/witch results: Your target likes to get drunk and test their luck. They must be the Gambler.

To be honest, I don't like the idea of adding mini-game roles into ToS, just because it really defeats the point of it. Also, gambling is random chance, and its random chance what cards you have been dealt, which is bad, because it means you can win with blind luck, and a lack of skill.

I don't own coven, but I know it does. However, lets note some things about it.

1: Its almost completely random if it wins or loses a duel.
2: The interface is really an elaborate distraction of people noticing that.
3: Its not fair to play as or against something thats random, because Town of Salem doesn't base itself off of it. If all roles had some random chance, it would be fair, but none do.
4: BMG aren't the best balancers in the world (Retri, Jailor, Mayor, Arsonist, (Town winrate still being 80% in a normal game of ranked))
5: If the role Pirate was suggested here without it being in the game, it wouldn't be considered because of random chance. We try and make balanced role ideas here, and Pirate represents none of TG's, or the Role Idea Community's wishes.
6: Just because a bad role exists, doesn't mean that you need to add more bad roles into the game.

You are starting out, I see, so, it is only to be expected that your ideas may lack some balance. My first ideas were absolutely awful. I think some good ideas would be wonderful here, and its great to have a creative mind. Balance is a tightrope, really, and its easy to fall on either side, but far easier to start with to fall on overpowered roles. You'll get the hang of it. Sadly, this role in my opinion is just flawed. You will get better, that is inevitable, and brilliant. I just don't like this

I get what you're saying, but to be fair, poker and blackjack (21) have more skill involved than luck. If you lose, it's not like you die or anything, so there's no risk, therefore, the chance factor doesn't harm the player, because if the got a bad hand, well then they move on. With pirate, the chance matters, and if you choose the wrong move, you die. Honestly, I could see this being an alternative to Pirate.

This is just pirate, really. I can't exactly say I'm too fond of it.

I can always just change it up a bit and maybe add some kind of different mechanic to it, rather than a card game.
Also, It's very different from Pirate, as it doesn't have the ability to kill, and is more than just luck-based. There is skill involved in the games, and there's no risk if you lose, which is what makes it benign.
