Statistician (Town Investigative)

Role Name:
Statistician

Role Alignment:
Town Investigative

Abilities:
Choose a role each night to perform a census of.

Attributes:
You will learn the number of living players with the role you selected.
Framed, doused, and hexed players do not show up in a census.

Goal:
Lynch every criminal and evildoer.

Win Conditions:
Same as Town.

Additional Information:
I discussed this role in the Discord and some people were concerned that it was too strong.

Potential Nerfs:
- Check subalignments instead of roles (proposed by Wave)
- Only check whether the target role exists (proposed by Rydog)

I have a few questions:

1) How would it check a role or alignment? Does it get a drop down list? Does it check via a player?
2) What is the role's invest results? Because that will have an impact on its strength/weaknesses.
3) Will Hexed/Framed/Doused targets come up if you check a Hex master, Framer or an Arsonist

It does not check a player. Instead it gets a list like forger where it picks a certain role. For example, the Statistician may choose Sheriff on N1 and find out that there are two Sheriffs. Then on N2 they could choose Doctor and find out there aren't any Doctors.

Haven't thought much about this yet but I would put it in the Lookout/Forger/Witch or Lookout/Forger/Jugg/CL result mostly just because that result is scum heavy and could benefit from an easier TI fake claim.

They don't come up as anything. I could make those players come up as Hex/Framer/Arso as a small nerf to the role but I think that would take away some strategic value from checking evil roles, which the role mostly lacks.

so a role that limits claim space? no not really a fan, already got roles like spy which screw over evils by existing now you get a role that checks confirms and limits claim space... how fun!

Investigator gets rid of claim space and is arguably worse than Statistician. With Investigator you pigeonhole one person into 1-2 claims. With Statistician you eliminate 1-2 roles from everyone. Especially with the current rolelist games are decided quite quickly, so Statistician won't be able to do much before the game is all but decided. If anything you'll get a greater diversity of fakeclaims with Statistician since players wouldn't want to get busted claiming Sheriff or Bodyguard, so they might go with harder claims like Investigator.

Statistician's main weakness is that it's far less direct than roles like Sheriff and Investigator. If someone is acting suspicious, you either need to hope that you previously checked the role they claim (which is less likely than you would think since players would be claiming more roles) or you need to check them that night and hope for a conclusive result. If you get anything other than zero, you then have to coordinate the town and see if there are any CCs, forcing players to reveal themselves even if they don't really want to. And you have to do all this while believing that the Statistician is telling the truth and that anyone CC'ing is telling the truth.
