Painter (Mafia Deception) Role Idea

Name: Painter

Alignment: Mafia Deception, (Not original but here is my spin to it)

Introduction: You are a shady person that paints random sceneries that influence everyone who sees it

Attack: None

Defense: None

Unique Role: No

Priority: 2 (Night Ability), 6 (Transformation/Spreading)

Abilities:

During the Night, you may give a cursed painting to a player of your choice

Mechanics pt 1:

(How the Ability works)

-Whoever has a painting with them will share the Painter's invest result, and will be prevented from interacting with the dead/Roles that target the dead{IF YOU HAVE DIED}(Ex: Medium and Retributionist)(Such as Talking and being Revived) and their role is replaced by the role Painter

-The target may remove this debuff by simply being visited or visiting, however the visited/visitor will recieve the painting "effect" and shares all it's debuffs,It can only spread up to 2 times in total per painting

-You will know who has a painting by the end of the night.The target and their target/visitors will also know if they have a painting at the end of the night however they will not know if the painting has been successfully removed/passed on from them

(Other)

-If the target was both VISITED BY a player and VISITED a player, then the target's visitor takes priority and the target's visited player isn't affected

-If the Jailor has jailed your target with the painting, The Jailor will be affected by the painting

-You cannot target your own mafia members, but the painting can be spread to them by visiting the target with a painting or by being visited by the target with a painting

-If the Painter visits you/have visited the Painter, you will be notified that you have a painting as if the Painter was simply another person who was targeted by the Painter

-The Medium isn't affected by the Painting unless they have died,so they can still talk with the dead while alive

-A Medium's Seance would still go through as the ability's effects are lower than 1

-A Retributionist with a painting can still revive however cannot revive those who had a painting prior to their death

-A Necromancer with a painting can still perform their ability

-A player with a painting can still be used by a Necromancer however will have no effect

(Expected Gameplay)

Guideline Goal: Paint as many targets while staying alive for as long as possible in order to get the full benefit of your role, It's ability gives way for more claim space as Town will still need to decide if the dead target is the actual Painter or not, it also makes claims such as Medium slightly more believable

N1: Paint a target who may look suspicious and let it spread

N2: Repeat N1 but give it to someone important

N??: Check if it's needed, if not then save it

Attributes:

-Standard Mafia Attributes

-You can only use your ability 3 times per game.

-Investigative Results-

Sheriff: Your target is Suspicious.

Investigator: Framer/Vampire/Jester/Hex Master/Painter

Consigliere/Witch: Your target has a thing for art .They must be the Painter!

Real Goal/Win Con.: Same as Mafia

Wins With: Same as Mafia

Must Kill: Same as Mafia

Messages:

-Player X has decided to give a painting to Player Y (Painter's Ability)

-You've noticed that Player X,Player Y, Player Z....),has a painting! (Painter's Ability)

-You've recieved a painting from a mysterious person! (Recieving from the Painter/target with a painting)

-You were allured by your target's painting, you felt like you should steal it! (Visiting the target)

You wanted to speak with the other friendly souls but a mysterious force from the painting prevents you so.(When attempting to speak in dead chat)

The flavor makes it sound like a Coven role.

I'm gonna tentatively say this is Underpowered. It looks sort of like a Janitor that doesn't clean the will, and gets unlimited "cleans" in exchange. The chaotic movement of the painting doesn't look to me like it would help the Painter much; the mafia would be better off just killing the cursed player ASAP. (Especially since if someone gets the paining and survives, the town can potentially exploit the painting messages to confirm people.)

Lore wise they were a former Coven Member that was hypnotized by the Hypnotist to help the Mafia, eventually being recruited by the Godfather

Whose to say it wasn't the Painter himself trying to convince that he was a victim of the real Painter?,You also lose most of it's benefit for not spreading the painting first ,the point of this role is to provide as many claim space as possible,since the Town will need to assess if that was actually a Town member or an Evil which would be hard if the player wasn't confirmed or was acting too sus .

It also gives access to good claims for Tracker,Lookout,Medium. You can now fake these easier which would be good for Forger, since you would know who has a painting by the end of the night, and would indirectly buff the Forger since you can now make them look more Mafia.

If there's a real painting floating around, then the painter can't lie about it because then he would be contradicting someone else. If two people contradict each other, then the town pulls a "lynch the one execute the other if inno", and evils lose out either way.

I'm confused. It sounds like you're explaining why letting the player spread before killing the player would be good, but after reading this, I still don't know why that would be good.

If players are claiming "I got the painting", though, then the Tracker/Lookout wills showing only painting info will look suspicious.

Medium is always a susp claim unless you get actual info (or confirm with another Medium); this role will get more Mediums lynched, but not many more because single Mediums already get lynched a lot.

I mean what im trying to say was referring to a mechanic that gives you a message if you have either visited a player that has the painting or the Painter himself and that you don't even place the painting and claim to be the one painted, since people will think that you were the one visited by maf they will potentially think that you're less sus and therefore makes the exploit less likely imo, sure they will eventually find out in a couple of days but you're wasting 1-2 nights for them

I'm confused. It sounds like you're explaining why letting the player spread before killing the player would be good, but after reading this, I still don't know why that would be good.

Basically you would then know who is a potential town role that needs to be killed for ex: Player X has a painting on N1, Player X gets attacked and healed, You would then know who is likely the TP, you would also know the Escort/Transporter/Jailor if they claimed to be rbed/transed/jailed, it also comes handy when a accusation takes place for ex: Player Y has a painting on N1, they get investigated by the Investigator on N2, they claim that the player was the Painter, The Investigator gets lynched and is now shown as the Painter thereby making the TI spot a space for potential maf claims for a few nights, or just general VFR

^Having claims that makes you survive for a few nights is always good even if it was just for 1 Night, if it were to be a 100% no doubt can make you confirmed then Mafia would prob win more games than Town in a heartbeat, also LO claims always tend to be confirmed as it's hard to fake it without having results and good scumreading, so having a new way of making the LO role itself more suspicious is good for me

Sure, but that's an edge case, and it isn't unique to the Painter; the Consigliere is much better at discovering rival evils (and the town is pretty good about considering that the person catching non-Mafia evils might be a Consig).
