Faction: The Church

Goal: Eliminate all heresy.

At first, I was apprehensive about choosing a religious theme, but then I remembered the Crusader existed and thought "why not?" I thought this faction would be a cool gimmick in that it is an independent faction that can win with the town but also needs some specific roles dead. I've never done role ideas before, so creating an entire faction might have been a bit too ambitious, but I couldn't get it out of my head and just had to write it down. Please tell me any suggestions/criticism!

Members of the Church may communicate with each other at night.

All members of the Church are immune to Escorts and Consorts.

The Church must kill all heretics.

The Church wins with the Town if it has no heretics.

The Church wins with the Survivor.

The Church wins with the Guardian Angel.

The Church wins with the Crusader.

The Church wins with the Vampire Hunter.

The Church may spare anyone else.

Heretics are:

    All Mafia members

    All Coven members

All Neutral Killing, Neutral Evil, and Neutral Chaos roles

All Town Killing roles EXCEPT Vampire Hunter

    The Psychic

    The Escort

    The Medium

    The Retributionist

    Any revived player

Roles:

High Priest (leader):

Each night, you may bless a player, removing poison and granting them Basic defense for that night.

If the Church has found a Vampire, Werewolf, Pestilence, or a Plaguebearer that has now become Pestilence, you may choose to call down divine retribution and smite that player, dealing an attack that defeats Invincible defense.

You may bless yourself and others in the Church.

Priest:

Each night, you may receive divine inspiration about the role of any player. The result will be revealed to you at the end of the night and the Church at the beginning of the next night.

Inquisitor:

On the first night, you act like a Priest.

On every night after, you may choose to deal a Basic attack to any player whose role has been revealed to the Church. If you choose to target a heretic, you will deal a Powerful attack instead.

Achievements:

General:

Blessed: Win with all members of the Church still alive.

Master of the Holy: Win with all Church roles.

Purified: Win with no Town members alive (except Crusader or Vampire Hunter).

High Priest:

Selfless: Don’t bless yourself for the entire game.

Slip of the Tongue: Bless a known heretic.

Destroy the Wicked: Smite Pestilence, Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Priest:

The Eyes of God: Find a Vampire or Werewolf on the first night.

Honorary Executioner: Find a heretic and get them lynched before their role is revealed to the rest of the Church.

A Blessing in Disguise: Find Pestilence, Horseman of the Apocalypse and die to them on the same night.

Inquisitor:

For the Greater Good: Kill a non-heretic.

Finishing the Job: Kill a heretic that you found yourself.

Nobody Expects It: Kill a heretic Town member.

Additional Information:

If only members of the Town and Church are left and there are still heretics alive, the Town wins and the Church loses.

In any other case where only the Church and one other faction remain, the game continues as normal.

The Crusader, Vampire Hunter, Guardian Angel are not part of the Church (or maybe they should be? I’m open to suggestions), but still win as if they were part of the Church; i.e. if they die but the Church wins, they still win.

All text:

High Priest:

“You have decided to bless X.”

“Your target was attacked, but your blessing saved them!”

“Your blessing cured your target’s poison!”

“You were attacked, but a blessing from the High Priest saved you!”
“Your poison was cured by a blessing from the High Priest!”

“You have decided to smite X.”

“You have successfully smitten a Vampire/Werewolf!”

“God itself has eliminated Pestilence, Horseman of the Apocalypse!”

Priest:
“You have decided to receive divine inspiration as to the role of X.”

See below for divine inspiration results.

Inquisitor:

“Tonight, the Church is too uninformed to eliminate any heresy. Instead, you will receive divine inspiration about one person’s role.”

“The Church has begun to accumulate information. From now on, you may attempt to eliminate heresy.”

“You have decided to silence X for standing in the path of the Church.”

“You have decided to eliminate X for heresy.”

The following day…

“They were killed by an Inquisitor.”

“They were eliminated by an Inquisitor.”

“They were annihilated by divine retribution.”

Divine inspiration results (also shown to the Church the following night):

“X is an Investigator. They are not guilty of heresy.”

“X is a Guardian Angel. They share the interests of the Church!”

“X is a Mafioso and a part of organized crime. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Potion Master who dabbles in the occult. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is an Arsonist who wishes death upon all. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Witch and practices magic. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Jester/Executioner who wishes to interfere with our justice system. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Pirate who wishes to steal the wealth of others. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Plaguebearer who wishes to spread the plague. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Jailor who kills others and pretends it is justice! They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Psychic who falsely pretends to interpret the word of God. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is an Escort/Consort who exploits the passions of others. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Medium who holds unnatural communions with the deceased. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Retributionist who usurps God’s will by tampering with death. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a revived Investigator and an abomination in the eyes of God. They are guilty of heresy!”

“X is a Vampire/Werewolf and an insult to all that is holy! They must be eliminated!”

“X is Pestilence, Horseman of the Apocalypse, enemy of God itself! They must be eliminated at all costs!”

Possible changes:

The Vampire Hunter is removed from the game entirely instead of winning with the Church.

Instead of making the Inquisitor a Priest the first night, they instead can only determine if their target is a heretic (they would still find the specific roles of Vampires and Werewolves).

Inquisitors cannot kill until a heretic has been found.

Divine retribution instead only deals an Unstoppable attack. If Pestilence is smitten, then:

their role will be revealed to everyone the following day,

2 (or 3) people, of whom one is Pestilence, will “smell like char” the next day,

or their role will be revealed two days later.

Once Pestilence has been smitten, if they are lynched, a variation of the “Lightning Rod” death animation will play where the clouds and lightning bolt are white, the lightning bolt is much bigger, different music plays, and there are no remains following the lightning strike.

I really like your ideas a lot!! They're very creative, and this faction idea is really interesting.

I do like that potentially "psychic" town members are considered evil to The Church. What kind of throws me off, however, is that The Church's goal is to kill all heretics. Unless it's a very corrupt church, churches realistically advocate against murder and are specifically trying to eliminate murderers, so it doesn't make much sense to me that their goal is to commit murder themselves.

Maybe, to solve this, the Church could work more like Vampires and convert or "baptize" wrongdoers, and doing so would rid them of their sins and cause them to become members of the church. However, with some evils being on teams and with a limited amount of Church roles (as of right now), I don't know how that would work.

3 Highest Town Role Winrates:
Doctor (98), Jailor (98), Spy (87)

3 Highest Mafia Role Winrates:
Mafioso (60), Godfather (45), Janitor (22)

3 Highest Neutral Role Winrates:
Jester (36), Witch (28), Executioner (22)

I don't think a faction that splits the Town, winning with some Town roles and not others, is a good idea for this game.

This reminds me of the "Inquisition" faction idea that I've been toying with, but implementing the "Inquisition" would require giving all the regular townies the Survivor goal so the Inquisition can have the "kill all evils" goal, so it would have to be a different game rather than a Town of Salem mod.

For Town of Salem, I don't think that there's a way to make the Church make sense as a faction when the Town is such a prominent faction already.

Members of the Church may communicate with each other at night. Okay, sounds good.
All members of the Church are immune to Escorts and Consorts. Makes sense lore wise but roleblock immunities are only given to prevent paradoxes.
The Church must kill all heretics.
The Church wins with the Town if it has no heretics.
The Church wins with the Survivor.
The Church wins with the Guardian Angel.
The Church wins with the Crusader.
The Church wins with the Vampire Hunter.

  • Any revived player

So you're splitting the town? I mean it could work but it will be confusing. Town could just lynch all those claims in a Church gamemode and then win with the Church. If Church wins with town by killing all heretics, is it a town win or a church win? If it is a Church win, who wins the game. Every town except the heretics in addition to the Church?

Roles:
High Priest (leader):
Each night, you may bless a player, removing poison and granting them Basic defense for that night. So a Doctor?

If the Church has found a Vampire, Werewolf, Pestilence, or a Plaguebearer that has now become Pestilence, you may choose to call down divine retribution and smite that player, dealing an attack that defeats Invincible defense. Does that mean if a High Priest blesses a heretic, it finds it and then smites them?

You may bless yourself and others in the Church. Uh, you should only be able to bless yourself once.

Priest:
Each night, you may receive divine inspiration about the role of any player. The result will be revealed to you at the end of the night and the Church at the beginning of the next night. So a Consigliere for the Church? Also that 'beginning of the next night' should be removed because they can just tell them like the Consig does but won't if they die.

Inquisitor:
On the first night, you act like a Priest.

On every night after, you may choose to deal a Basic attack to any player whose role has been revealed to the Church. If you choose to target a heretic, you will deal a Powerful attack instead. So each kill takes two nights minimum to make? One to find a role, and a second to actually kill IF they turn out to be a heretic? Seems a tad bit swingy to me, could be wrong.

Achievements:
General:
Blessed: Win with all members of the Church still alive.
Master of the Holy: Win with all Church roles.
Purified: Win with no Town members alive (except Crusader or Vampire Hunter).

Re: Faction: THE CHURCH

Splitting any faction should be avoided. I do like the idea of auto-sharing information. (would be nice if that was done with mafia)

would be interesting if this was reworked into an anti-vampire faction. Maybe the church "recruits" town by making them priests, upgrading the oldest to an inquisitor if the inquisitor dies, while vampires bite people. Make it so they don't know who the others are. Would be an interesting conversion race. Maybe even make it so the OG inquisitor can be upgraded into the high priest if they haven't died.
