Standardized Kill Power Resolution System

Postby James2 » Fri Mar 15, 2019 12:43 am

The following is a proposal for a standardized categorization of kill power and immunity, similar to ToS's system, but with a few important differences.

Kill power would be ranked as follows:

None (meaning no killing ability)
Basic
Powerful
1st degree unstoppable
2nd degree unstoppable
3rd degree unstoppable
etc.

Immunity would be ranked as follows:

None (will die to any kill)
Basic (is protected against any basic kill)
Powerful (is protected against any powerful or lower kill)
1st degree invincible (is protected against any 1st degree unstoppable or lower kill)
2nd degree invincible (is protected against any 2nd degree unstoppable or lower kill)
3rd degree invincible (is protected against any 3rd degree unstoppable or lower kill)
etc.

Conferred immunity (such as heals or other protection) is classified in the same way as the innate immunity of a role. Likewise, conferred kill power (such as provided by gunsmiths) is classified in the same way as a role's innate kill power.

There is no upper limit to degrees of immunity or kill power, but no "infinity" kills or immunity are allowed, and the number must be typed out in digits within the relevant role card, and may not be within any spoiler internal to the role card. In the absence of specification, kill power would be considered basic, unless stated to be immunity piercing, in which case it would be considered powerful. In the absence of specification, immunity would be considered basic, unless it is specifically stated to apply even to immunity piercing roles. No role may have a kill power or immunity greater than powerful unless this is explicitly stated. Certain killing intention roles (such as Arsonist) have kills that have a different power level when actually carried out than when the killing intention action is taken (e.g. a BG's protection or a Vet's alert can stop a douse, but cannot stop an already doused person from being ignited). This should be handled by specifying kill power levels for both parts of the killing action. There are also roles (such as firefighter) which are hard counters to other roles. This should be handled by giving the role a default immunity level, as well as an immunity level for a specific case, which could be higher or lower.

This system has the advantage of resolving in advance all potential disputes regarding how killing actions should interact with immunity in particular circumstances. It is not intended to apply to lynches, but is intended to apply to all other forms of killing, including killing that occurs during the day.

The main differences between this system and ToS's system are:

1. This includes no upper limit to the strength of kill power or immunity, and
2. This is intended to be fully comprehensive. ToS retains "harmful effects" as a special category not fully covered by the classification system (e.g. the Doctor can cure poison but the Crusader can't even though both confer Powerful defense, the Poisoner only has a basic attack, and there is nothing on the Doctor's or Crusader's role card indicating this difference). Under this system, the Posioner would be listed as having a basic attack when poisoning, but an unstoppable attack when the poison actually kills. The Doctor, meanwhile, would confer powerful immunity generally, but would confer invincible immunity to poison. Admittedly this isn't really a problem in ToS, since it has a small number of roles. But since FM has a potentially infinite number of roles in play, a standardized system is needed.
