A potential problem with player retention

Postby mdb1023 » Wed Sep 05, 2018 7:51 pm

I'm not too sure if this is a huge problem or not but I feel its something to point out regardless:
The reason I stopped playing FM is because its getting to the point where it feels impossible to keep up with the game if you have any semblance of a hobby/ life outside of the forums. Maybe it's just me, but I've tried getting back into FM numerous times and found that too much gets posted at once for me to keep up with the game. I noticed the My Hero Academia game has nearly reached 200 pages before night 1. That's just... How does anyone keep up with that?

Like I said, maybe this is a smaller issue than I'm making it out to be, but I feel like maybe this is something that should be made apparent. Feel free to tell me that I'm wrong/stupid/ whatever.

I don't believe this is a big problem. If you don't think you can keep up with a game very well, join a smaller one. The example you cited, SFM46, was a 30p game, so if you compare that to a 13p VFM/NFM, it'll be about 10 pages a day, which is realistic to keep up with.

It can depend on the game. Plus pages don’t always equate to content. Ideally games should consider 1 hour a day of availability.
The fact is is that FM is a hobby itself. Plus a lot of people on here are young and don’t realize that something like a 72 hour day phase is punishing on the average person. School (and college) leaves you with more free time than you think. See: the above posters.

This is exceptionally stupid since tfms don’t exist.

On a somewhat related note, 30>24 for prod timers.

You don't need to catch up on every post just read last 10-20 pages for first couple days at late game it will be eaiser to catch up overall

It's much easier to play in real time as well with those huge games, and then when you come back to the thread try and read the next few pages after you left as well.

Play NFMs then, they're relatively slow paced and they give you tons of time to catch up. If they're boring for you, then wait for a <15p Standard/VFM/SFM to be hosted.
RNG is never good for any strategy based game. Please learn the definition of what that means, especially if you're one of the people constantly defending it.

We could start hosting light games (post maximum restriction per player each phase) which would make games easier to follow.

It was one of the things I really liked from MU.

With the removal of the TFM queue, you can't really count for there to always be a small game, as all current SFMs in the queue are 17p+. I think removing TFM games actually really hurt the amount of small easy to play games.

This is actually a huge problem for a few reasons.

1. Daunting for new and returning players.
2. Harder to moderate for new hosts and even some experienced mods
3. People reading games for pleasure is out the fucking window unless you have a bunch of time on your hands.
3b. Nobody will read to second someone's nomination in the whatever thread.
4. More time consuming to play.

Less is more, frankly. Adding an 100 post a day cap for standard games wouldnt be a bad idea at all. We need to have light games with 50 posts max and 5 posts minimum too. It's also a balance issue, since town has way more to gain with multiple hyper-active players... but thats a story for another time.

TFMs aren't the solution dude. Nobody wants to play that stuff, lets be real.
