Signup Etiquette
For Hosts:
- Have a clear OP.
Players should be able to clearly understand the rules, setup, and mechanics of the game that they are signing up for. See this guide by Varanus for suggestions on what to include in your OP. - Consider timezones.
Yes, there is no such thing as a perfect signup time. At least one person somewhere on the globe will find that signups start at an inconvenient time. However, if a large pool of potential players would be inconvenienced, consider another time. - Be sure that you aren't missing anybody.
This has happened before, but usually it is caught in advance. It can be easy to glide over a post made by a noavi. The best way to prevent this is to regularly update the signup list. This does not mean that you must update it every time somebody joins, but rather after enough time has elapsed or if a handful of people join. Treat it like you would a votecount. - Know when to sticky the thread.
The signups subforum is cluttered with stickies already. When you put up your thread for initial signups it should be stickied so that it is easier for people to see. When it fills you should change it to a standard topic. If you need a replacement, then sticky it again for visibility. - Establish how replacements will be done.
The default, and usually the best way, to handle replacements is on a first-come-first-serve basis so that the slot is filled quickly. Post a thread in your signups that includes the name of the player who is being replaced. If you choose to have a backup list then to expedite the process you should send one PM to everybody on the list and ask them to hit "reply all" if they choose to replace. Do note that backup systems work faster if players replacing out find a backup who agrees to replace them in advance.
For Players:
- Read the OP.
Be sure to know what you are agreeing to play. This will also prevent redundant questions that can be answered by reading the OP, such as asking whether or not mafia have daychat. Only ask questions that do not have answers, or have vague answers, in the OP. You should ask these questions in the signup thread before the game starts. If you do not understand the setup, if you do not know how the mechanics work, or if you cannot view an image in the OP then in the middle of the game is not the time to be asking that. - Do not make superfluous posts.
Signup threads should be for joining and asking questions only. Do not derail the thread. Do not post in the thread once the game has begun. Do not minimod either. - Bold your join post.
Even if you don't bold it at least make it so that people can notice it. - Follow instructions on how to replace in.
Unless there is a backup list then do not post to join a backup list. If you need to PM somebody to replace in, then PM them instead of posting in the thread. If you need to PM two people, then send the PM to both of them. - Don't fumble with alternate accounts.
If you wish to play on an alt it is heavily advised that you make the account in advance and make a throwaway post somewhere in introductions, Town of Salem discussion, or any other board where posts count. Otherwise you will need to wait on a GMod to approve the alt's first post while other people are joining the game. As per replacement rule 2, you need to inform the game's moderator of who the alt's main is.
