I'm gonna make a magic the gathering analogy
Say that you're going up against somebody who has a simple lab maniac demonic consultation combo
Then they go to play lab maniac and you have a counter in hand
You always use the counter on lab maniac because it's a combo piece. You have no direct confirmation on whether or not they have demonic consultation in hand, but you can assume they are trying to win the game that turn and lab maniac being in the graveyard shuts down their combo
This isn't a matter of winning the game, but it does put village in an objective worse spot
I mean a wolf could die from a day one stalk but that's not a gambit I'd think about taking when there is an easy out
