Ok. Say everyone takes your advice, and tries their best to act like mafia. What happens? The mafia wins, because they'll fit riiiiiight in. To examine why this line of reasoning is flawed, I'd like to highlight the cost and benefit of being towny.

Firstly. If you die, you don't LOSE. You progress your team towards defeat. However, if another town member dies, it will be the SAME progress towards defeat that occurs. Hence, if you actually look at this as if it's a TEAM game, rather than a FFA game, there should be little difference.
If you're towny, then sure, there's a slightly increased chance that you get shot. But you have to keep in mind, that means that for everyone else there's an ever so slightly DECREASED chance that everyone else gets hit, totalling to the increase in yours. Sure, this includes the third party factions (or in this case, the other mafia faction), hence increasing the overall chance that town progresses towards defeat. However, part of being towny is FINDING THE MAFIA and NOT DISTRACTING THE TOWN MEMBERS. Both of these increase the chance that the town will be able to lynch the mafia, or deal with them at night. The benefit here outweighs the cost (burden of proof lies on you for this one), hence, it is never a good idea to act scummy as town. That is just being selfish. And there is no "i" in team.
