I think 4 was a good number because it put a lot more pressure on town to finish the game in time, because putting game end on Day 9 is fairly early, and town must kill all mafia AND end paranoia, so if we had 5 mafia we would have extended the amount of time that town had allotted, which would have ended up basically the same way.
Also based on the fact that some of the mafia just rolled over and died, and yet town still barely won (I was expecting a draw), I think it was fine.
that's the glory about all the different win conditions of this game, you can basically choose whatever logistics (within reason) of game numbers, and balance win conditions around that to make it fair.
