While there are some similarities (e.g., some of the roles), it is different than Town of Salem. Forum Mafia is a much more discussion and scum reading based game and is more of a time commitment than Town of Salem (72 hour days, 24 hour nights). I recommend reading this. Forum Mafia is more complex than Town of Salem, but playing in a game is the best way to get acquainted to Forum Mafia. Reading through some past games can help as well. Let me know if you have any questions.

for reading games i'd personally suggest vfms rather than standards since that gives you more insight on the balance between dayplay and nightplay, and that some standards are just trainwrecks

I've watched all the episodes of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. A friend got me into them.
