I do think being able to choose from he/she/they instead of having to rely on a skin is a pretty simple and reasonable option. I might be more inclined to use one of the male skins if it wouldn't make the game refer to me as "he."
I'd be a little irritated if they added it in to be honest. After over a year of the game being filled with typos and oversights, adding in accommodation for people making things up would probably suck up BMG's development motivation for the next six months.
You play a character: the skins fit the roles.
