Hello, I don't understand this game

Hello people,

People I know asked me to play "Town of Salem" with them, and I assumed it was some kind of video game, but all I see is this Forum. Is Town of Salem a text-based Role Playing game? I am very confused. I tried looking through this forum for explanations but I can't find a simple explanation of what this game is.
