Why? Personally I see more utility for it in scum's hands. Town's only use for it is being able to cast an additional vote without revealing themselves as a DV, albeit allowing it to be placed on a second, different wagon.
This reminds me of a different game where a role with that ability was in play. I think the role's alignment was rolled, though...

More voting power is usually used to give more strength to the town during the day phase, or that how it was back when I played at least.

But thinking about it as a scum role, I could see some utility for it for the mafia. Both to give them the boring majority quicker, and for leading the town astray if we assume it's a town role.

The Marionette reveal timing is interesting for sure. If Lexiam is indeed mafia, it's possible that the Marionette was used as a bad attempt to lead discussion away from Lexa and prevent their scumbuddy from being lynched. Even if I feel they would've gotten more use out of it by waiting for the reveal until they could get a townie hammered to end a day early.

But the Marionette's role in this game will be more interesting of a discussion for tomorrow. Today I feel we should focus on whether we want to go for a nolynch or a Lexiam lynch.
Any other options seem infeasible this close to the deadline.

Yes, exactly. I expected it to be a modification of a standard role, but I can't find any standard role that seems similar.

And that was my main take from it as well, Rick. This seems to be a role that can have a (second?) vote without having to publicly announce the vote.
While we can't be sure, I assume that a role like that would be town aligned.

Either the controller of this marionette wanted to show that they thought the lynch was a bad idea, or they simply wanted to make their presence known. Considering they could've hammered Lex but didn't makes me think it's both.

Re: 8M | OCTOPATH | Day 2 | Grandport

Funnily enough, I've actually mostly gotten a town vibe from Metrion. I did take issue with this one post of theirs

Metrion wrote:
I didn't want to die, and I did not want all protectives to be on me. It was pretty important. I think my role is very obvious and that you are not thinking things through, and I don't like you pushing.

I feel the same about this as I do with Obi. I believe hinting at your own role this early on at all is a bad idea, as it simply gives the mafia a better idea of where to aim to pick off the power roles. But if you go as far as saying "I think my role is very obvious", you've already painted a huge target on your back, and you're better off just hard claiming and getting some protection from the town. Or at the very least saying "Yes, I am a town power role, but I don't want to reveal which yet."

The only other role claim that I noticed was the citizen one. I don't know how to feel about that one. Giving away your citizen role unprovoked is odd, and doesn't prove anything. If it's true, you're making the mafia's job easier by giving them one less player to choose from as a potential power role that they need to take care of. And as a mafia player, I wouldn't do it unprovoked because it makes the town feel less worried about lynching you if you're suspicious. Worst case scenario they "only" lynch a citizen. Especially with a secret role list like we have, it'd be easy for the mafia to claim a power role, instead of a disposable citizen.

Arcthurus wrote:

True. I suppose he could also have written the death note for the mafia, and then get escort blocked. That makes it 4 options.

Either of these 2 options would've been an unlikely coincidence, but I've seen weirder things happen. I mostly only focused on the "TP got framed" angle because it's the only angle that we could then try to prove through post history of other players to look for odd behaviour. That ended up being a bust anyway, making me believe the DN was probably not intended to frame TP.

Nellyfox wrote:hey i feel like this is a call out to me since you are leaning towards scumreading me already so...namedrop. go for it. is this the only reason you find me scummy, even tho you have decided to abandoned this thought

While you calling out the Death Note as seeming very "TP-like" at the time did make me wonder, I wouldn't say this event in particular made me suspect you of being scum. Right now no single post of yours strikes me as obviously scum, but overall I'm still not 100% on you.

Which is why your name is still orange in my big notepad of mafia notes. Along with 4 other oranges and 3 deep reds.

You had looked at two scenarios: TP lying about the RB and TP being framed + roleblocked. Why'd you choose those two?

I was going with the assumption that the Death Note was indeed in TurdPile's writing style. If it was, the only 2 logical options were that he either did write it himself, or the mafia wrote it.
If he wrote it himself, he would be a mafia member.
if he was framed(more likely), looking at people that were trying to push the DN as important evidence and trying to throw doubt onto TP would become suspicious.

I abandoned the idea after that post, because it didn't seem to make sense.

It was more about bringing it to the attention of the rest of the town anyway, and adding it to my list of reasons for being so suspicious of you. Without it, my whole post would've screamed OMGUS. I don't expect you to be willing to divulge it after being so secretive about it at the start of the day.

Arcthurus wrote:

To clarify: what "assumption" did you mean?

I missed this bit. The assumption I was talking about was that the Death Note had TurdPile's writing style. I didn't recognize it as such myself, but I'm not familiar enough with his writing style.
It was interesting to me to consider as an option, because if the death note was incriminating TurdPile specifically, it'd noticeably reduce the people who could have written it. (besides him himself, of course)

And if the Death Note was indeed written by somebody trying to frame him, you could then look at how people interacted with TP to find suspects. I pretty much abandoned this train of thought though. It feels like too much guesswork, and the interactions I've seen don't support it as a scenario.

A lot of players are inexperienced, or at least extremely rusty at the game, not having played in years( me included)

And no, that by itself wasn't enough to make me pin him as a potential mafia member. But the rest of his posts since then, combined with his odd attempt at hinting a power role unprovoked right at the start of D2 made me extremely suspicious of him. But they were capable of posting on the forum about their internet troubles. So it's not that weird to assume that they should have been able to make at least one single post about their feelings about the game so far.

After their internet connection came back, they read through the entire thread. And instead of using this moment to inform us of their feelings so far, this is what we get.

No thoughts whatsoever. A mention about how they look scummy every game, and then putting the pressure on the rest of the town to get information out of them.
After this, they say they were too busy to spend time on reads. Sure, it could be possible. But it seems awfully convenient to me.

Won’t be back on much tonight, but will try to pop in before days end

Hinting at a role without being willing to reveal more doesn't help the town. You'd just be making yourself a target if you were a town member at risk of being night killed. Any unprompted hinting at something special like that will always make me suspicious of you, as a cheap way of trying to win favour if people start suspecting you later on. "See, I've been setting up for my amazing power role reveal since the start of day 2"
And waving away all of my reasons for being suspicious of you as WIFOM doesn't much help my feeling about you either.

To be clear, what was your conclusion here? That they were both town?

Ah, I saw this just now.
Do you mean Naru and Nelly? Or TP and Arckas?

In TP and Arckas' case, I believed they were just town players who believed the plan would be worth it in their head.

Naru is on my scum list on my current notepad file I'm working on. Nelly is orange. Which is leaning scum.

Ugh, I've been working on an attempted post for two hours now, and I'm not getting anywhere. I keep finding a person who I believe is suspicious, and then they make a post that makes them appear extremely town.
I didn't want to do this, but I'm going to call out a post that I wanted to ignore on day 2, because it's the one post he made that made me think he might not be scum.

I've been looking through Obi's (very short) ISO over and over, trying to understand what he's doing.
He seemed 100% convinced that Gent was town. This seemed odd at the time, his only 2 d1 posts being about how Gent seemed very townie. And then Gent shows up dead, proving his read. This made me suspicious of him, because it felt like he was trying to gain town credit by showing his great read on Gent.
ObiWan wrote:Slept peacefully

Rip to my town read

Apart from this, he seems to have stayed mostly in the background, only popping up to agree with what others have been saying. Either that, or asking others to pitch in, instead of having to contribute something himself.
He did eventually do a read list on everybody, but even that felt lackluster to me. His mafia reads all seemed to be based on what other people felt, while not getting a read on a lot of other players. His only town reads were the "safe" options, with some exceptions.

But here's the thing. I wasn't going to bring this up at first, but I'm sure some evil roles noticed this as well.

ObiWan wrote:I don’t like Guzames initial reaction to the n1 kill. Seems very forced.

This is such a weird post. What drastic thing could you possible have planned that you want to announce ahead of time? I assume you're not talking about a power role ability, because if you did it'd be very bad news to just announce it like that.

Possibly? Their play has seemed odd to me, especially the fixation on Metrion. They have made several posts during this day, but the content in the posts seems very minimal.
I get more of a newbie townie feeling from their playstyle than scum, just because I figure a mafia player wouldn't try to attract attention like that.

I'm working on a bigger post with my feelings about what to do today in another window, but it's taking some time to put my thoughts into words.

That, or at least some compelling conversation to help us get to a person you would then start pressuring.

That seems kind of hypocritical, considering you called out other players for using the same logic against you.

I've been working for most of the day from Tuesday to Thursday, only getting home at 11. While my work does allow me some time on my phone, my activity during working hours is limited.

That being said, there are worse lynch targets. I said it myself that a mislynch this early on isn't the end of the world, if you look at the interactions that player has had with others.

I can't tell if it's just their inexperience, but the inactivity combined with the lack of helpful content in the few posts they did make make me very suspicious of them.

And yes, I realize I'd be one of the potential lynch candidates if we go that route, with how many people have me as neutral or leaning scum in their reads.

The third option would of course be a no lynch. Give us 5 more days of discussion and some night actions and hope that helps us. But with the pace the discussion is going right now, I don't even know if that would be enough if we don't make a push now.
