Please stop abstaining

Postby theninjarobot » Tue Aug 04, 2015 5:13 pm

It is so frustrating to get lynched by a few votes as a Town Member because your supposed allies couldn't be bothered to vote innocent. As the Mafia I like playing with people who have this mentality because it makes the game easier for me. I accept that there are many situations where abstaining is necessary, but more often than not your fellow team mates just don't care because it's not them on the stand. People are so afraid of lynching a Jester that they abstain which is fair enough in some circumstances, however this doesn't prevent them from putting people on the stand in the first place.

This is the main reason why I hope the developers get rid of the Mayor role and not just because I find whisper games to be incredibly boring since they require very little skill. In my experience the Mayor will put anyone they want on the stand and then abstain from voting regardless of any defence. A lot of the time this results in a Town Member being lynched because the Mayor didn't vote innocent.

There is one very simple way to end this practice, which is to make voting guilty or innocent mandatory for anyone voting to put someone on the stand. I think this is a fair solution which would also help to prevent people being lynched randomly.

What do you guys think of my proposal?

there are many situations where abstaining is necessary

not true at all. There is only one situation where you should abstain.

I'm going to be honest and say that I wrote that specifically to appease those who may disagree with me.

I'm hoping for an open discussion as opposed to simple yes or no responses.

Ehhhh.... I'm not sure about this thread....

/abstain

But yes, I agree. However, the vast majority of people on the forums likely understand that. Most people don't visit the forums so you're better off mentioning the whole thing about abstaining during games to spread the word.

Abstain so transporter can transport guilt.
Abstain as town leader in case of jesters.
That's two right there. ;)

Well you covered my one. Making someone take the fall by having everyone abstain. The other one I usually don't follow as the number of abstainers is so freaking high that I usually only see like 2 votes. And most of time I just barely end up passing majority. So I'll stick to voting guilty on people.

I only do it if I am trans or jailor is dead and we don't know if there is a vigilante. Of course most towns say "waste of an exe" and refuse to let your jailor kill the jester even though they will vote with scum if they are lynched in return.

I don't see the issue of abstaining? It's what you do when you're not entirely certain of what they are.

Favorite role is Jester.

There are precisely three reasons why I abstain from votes.
1. Not sure if Jester.
2. Not sure if evil or Exe target.
3. I'm AFK due to IRL things happening. (I have a life, unlike some townies out there...)
You can find me in game as Grumpy Cat. I usually play All Any.
Fastest wins: Mayor/Arso/BM/BG, all D4
Fastest losses: Amne D2 (2/3 maf left and last was found out), Jester D3 (Town won before I could get lynched)

Well played Deleter. #esdrama confirmed
I think abstaining should maybe be removed in ranked? If you're so good, you should make a decision and have decent reasoning why.
But abstaining is useful for newbies who are unsure; don't want to look mafia by voting inno and don't want to be uninformed by voting guilty.

If you're not entirely certain what they are then you should probably vote innocent anyway. By abstaining the situation doesn't change except for the fact that you won't feel personally responsible if a Town Member gets lynched.

Also, I specified that only those who put people on the stand in the first place should be forced to vote. If you're unsure of whether someone is guilty you shouldn't put them on the stand in the first place.

I believe the Mayor role should be removed because it isn't fun and it requires no skill.

Well, no. mayor does require skill, you need to be a town leader (not everyone can do that), you need to think through every move you make (like the transporter, you can make or break a game) like if I get to vig claims I simple say player 1 vs player 2 fight, and the next day I have a dead mafia member or a lynched godfather ;)

also, I love being mayor :D
