Ranked Season 1 Ending Early and Hot Fixes

Hey Townies,

Today we are announcing the end of Season 1, the start of Season 2, and a hotfix patch to address an exploit user PeteMailer on Reddit reported.


End of Season 1 and Start of Season 2

As most players know, there was a ranked bug that allowed users to leave the game if they were going to lose and would prevent them from losing Elo when doing so. This took us far too long to find and patch and we would like to sincerely apologize for this. We will be improving our QA pipeline with our newest hire, an experienced QA manager. The issue, however, left long term effects on Elo. We have spent the past month investigating the impact it had, and deciding what to do about it. After looking at the effect it had, talking to community members about potentially resetting elo or talking Elo away from the abusers, we have decided to end Season 1 early and wipe the career high leaderboards. With the start of Season 2, we hope that all of the issues that would effect Elo have been fixed and Season 2 will be a true representation of our communities skill.

Season 1 will be ending December 4th, and Season 2 will be starting shortly there after. Players will be awarded season rewards as Season 1 ends.



Exploit Hotfix

PeteMailer submitted a bug report on 11/25 detailing that the order in which votes where sent down at the end of the voting phase was correlated to the roles in the game. This was due to the votes being sent down based on role priority. This has been fixed and is now completely random. We are thankful that someone posted such a lengthy and detailed guide on the issue and this allowed us to find the bug and fix it quickly.


Other bugs that have been fixed.

Fixed an issue that would cause the Jailor to receive the "You didn't perform your day ability" message when turned into a Vampire.
Fixed an issue that would sometimes show your target's defense value was too high if the player you attacked was jailed and had an a defense value that would have saved them.
Fixed several achievements that would not be granted when the goal was fulfilled.
Fixed an issue when selecting the "No Pet" option that would not save and continue to use the pet that was previously had selected.
Fixed an issue that would cause a Vigilante to die of guilt if the Necromancer had used them to kill a townie, but was later revived.

I'm assuming this means there is no reset, just the leaderboards are being wiped. I.e. everyone who abused their way to master will now begin season 2 at master? :hmm:

edit: actually upon re-reading, wiping all the career highs means everyone is back to 1200? If so then thank god, this game might actually go back to what it once was

I honestly think now is the time you definitely hard reset, Season 1 was a bit of a disaster really, and the only way of recovering the game "back to what it once was" as Chancellor said above is to hard reset.

If not you've barely changed a thing and may as well carry on with season 1

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's okay to reset people because of the bug, even if some people did grind it legitimately. I grinded like 500 elo legitimately (1.5k to 2k) and I would happily do it over again or from 1200. I know people who went from 1.2k to 2k legitimately too and they also wouldn't mind a reset.

for the sake of:
1) all those who grinded legitimately and therefore actually care about elo
2) old high elo players
3) new players to the game

Just do a complete reset. If anyone dares complain that their elo shouldn't be reset because they did it legitimately, the community will back BMG. When I explained the elo bug to people who don't play ToS they've always agreed a complete reset/legacy reset is appropriate (just reverting back to pre-bug). I think a complete wipe would be more fun for everyone.

Just chiming in to say I fully support a hard reset. It would vastly improve ranked games, which is what every competitive player wants.

I agree with a hard reset and making everyone start out with 1200 elo. I've gotten to 2k elo myself, starting out from 1200 but I don't even know if I actually deserve to be at this point. I'd gladly climb from 1200 elo again in a fair setting.

Finally, I would like to add one thing. Please do not do anything stupid like removing only 100 elo or anything that is not a hard reset. A hard reset was demanded by the players for days so please, just hard reset.

Here's one more vote for a hard reset! With all the people who have abused the ELO glitch, there is no good way to be able to position people's ranks with their current ELO. It's just so much easier to start from a clean slate.

Hard reset to 1200 is the best option. However, take into account that there were a massive number of leavers (almost each game) even in high elo games (mainly Mafia, NE, NK). Do you have any idea to prevent this? Maybe bigger punishment in elo for leaving before death?
