Mobile Status Update

Postby shapesifter13 » Mon Dec 28, 2015 5:08 pm

Hey Townies,

We wanted to give y'all some insight into mobile, and why it is taking so long.

Since Town of Salem is a Flash game we thought we would be able to port it to mobile using Adobe AIR. We were able to successfully port it, and had it working, but during play testing it was laggy even on decent tablets.

We decided it was best to rewrite the game from scratch in order to have better performance, and a good play experience.
It is being rewritten in C++ to get the best performance possible. Eventually we may be able to port this code into Steam to improve Steam performance by getting rid of Adobe AIR.

Mobile is coming soon!

TBH I'm not hyped for mobile. My phone is slow, the game won't work well with chat delays or automatic messages, and I'm never anywhere with WiFi long enough to play a full game.

Yes. Just yes.

Will the Flash client still be updated along with the C++ one?

I believe I read somewhere that the mobile version will initially only be on tablet. Will the game ever be on smartphone? I don't have a tablet, but I'm frequently on my phone during the day.

Wow. Ballsy move, porting the game to C++.

I respect that.

Now, I'm just saying this from my experience.
Tablets as far back as the iPad2 have the processing power to run Adobe Flash. How do i know? On My iPad, i run Town Of Salem (& Other high flash demanding games such as Happy Wheels & War Commander) Puffin Browser. Yes reworking it into C++ could probably work, but maybe tweaking it on basic Java might be the key. I do have to say having separate severs for mobile at start, but integration of mobile, computer (& and maybe console if ever) into the same servers eventually.

and if you understood that the browsers only EMULATE it, and take note that if you run a game like Town of Salem on your phone, it will run hot and possibly damage your iPhone, so no, do not be using Puffin on your phone until the app is released. If you damage your device, we are not responsible for any damage that takes place due to persistence on your end. We highly recommend you don't continue to use Puffin, or any other browser.

As much as I HATE saying this with every ounce of my being, the devs really need to pull out the stops on the moneyraking on the mobile version.

Ads should just be the beginning. I'd honestly be perfectly happy if scrolls and/or other things could only be bought with some non-TP currency that has to be bought for real money, there were "lives", or whatever else. At this point money from the mobile version should be the highest priority in my opinion. Anybody that would get the mobile version of ToS is probably used to that crap anyways.

Why would a closed beta be necessary?

Because they:
1: Don't want to overload their infastructure
2: Don't want to leak details ahead of time
3: Don't want testing to be ruined by trolls/gamethrowers

And probably more I'm not thinking of right now. The beta will very likely be progressively open to more players before entering an open beta period.

@Srpnt: Orange basically covered this. More than likely, Closed Beta will be between Global Moderators and FM Moderators. Considering FM helped us test Trial, and I'm sure the developers would want to test all 15 players in a game, so it will probably start with just the Global Moderators, Chris, Jacob, Brandon, and the Devs, Blake and Josh. That's 10. We'd probably work our way up there at some point.

Please note I don't know for sure, but if it's going to happen like Trial, then that's how it's gonna work.

As much as I hate to say you're right in this regard, you're absolutely correct. That means less for us... right?
Especially considering they've already said that Mobile users won't share servers with PC users, that opens the floodgates to anything extra they want to put in.

What then? Because you should definitely have to pay to remove ads. Moneymaking is the goal here.

Well, yeah. but not two separate apps. That's just silly.

You'd just have a "remove ads" in-game purchase. you wouldn't need two separate apps that serve absolutely the same purpose.

I thought most apps with removable apps have a "Pro" version that costs money.

Eh. Shows what I know about the mobile market.
